On the latest episode of the Ten to One Podcast, the hosts - Nate, Brad, and Ben - discuss last week's episode of Saturday Night Live, which featured Nate Bargatze as the host and electrifying performances by Foo Fighters.
The team is impressed by Bargatze's debut on SNL, despite his lack of acting experience. They discuss the eerie similarities between the song "Lake Beach" and their own hometown. They also have a debate about the correct pronunciation of regular cast member Ego Nwodim's name. The hosts have fun dissecting each segment of the show and share their favorite sketch, as well as who they believe was the MVP of the night.
Listen in for in-depth commentary, critique, and Ben's impression of Christopher Walken over and over again.

[00:00:00] Cordon up podcast with my friends having some fun sitting on a legbage
[00:00:12] It's the 10 to 1 podcast with your host Brad Oven
[00:00:18] featuring Ben Conowitz and
[00:00:22] Nate Loughs and here's the podcast
[00:01:25] stuff like that. But is he like a, is it to the point where he will draw people who don't normally watch Saturday Night Live or do you think that maybe it's like people aren't tuning
[00:01:28] in because they're like, who's Nate Burgazzy?
[00:01:30] All right. So listeners might not know that we are also huge fans of stand up. You guys
[00:01:34] have been done some amateur stand up things like this, but we watch a lot of, I got paid
[00:01:38] a couple of times. Okay. We watch a lot of stamp specials as well. Would you put Nate
[00:01:42] Burgazzy probably in the top 10 right now working or five or what?
[00:01:46] He's in the top the top right now. Him and Malaney are probably neck and neck for like the most popular touring force special, you know, stand-up comedians on the planet right now. Not in that legend status yet. Not the Gaffigan and the Seinfeld and- No, he just doesn't have a long enough career. Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
[00:03:00] But on his way.
[00:03:01] He's currently peaking right now.
[00:03:02] I mean, I would say that honestly,
[00:03:03] he's being on Saturday Night Live
[00:03:04] as a stand-up comedian selling on arenas.
[00:03:06] He's currently peaking.
[00:03:07] Yeah, let's got four specials on Netflix right now or whatever. No, a lot of people I talked to didn't know who he was. Right. And so you're going to get the people that who love him and watch stand up, to tune into this. But by and large, people tuning in to Sarah out live
[00:04:21] are going, who in the hell is this guy?
[00:04:22] Mm-hmm.
[00:04:23] Fair enough.
[00:04:24] I do love me some Berghatsy.
[00:04:25] Oh my god.
[00:04:26] And I hope that if people were able to choke found that out. OK. So just wanted you guys to know. Was he doing both at the time or no? No, because Jeopardy happened before. OK. I wasn't sure what was happening. OK. Alex Trebek. I'm willing to bet that there probably was some crossover, but he did Jeopardy first. Did he do Jeopardy for quite a while or no? Yeah. If I mean, yeah, because the original iteration of Jeopardy was on for, I think, 11 years.
[00:05:41] Oh, yeah.
[00:05:42] You're looking around for a confirmation.
[00:05:44] Yeah.
[00:05:44] Don't look at me.
[00:05:45] I've never gotten.
[00:05:47] By the way, here this one was just bad. It was not good It was just awful and so like I'm also curious So this is the debut of Mikey day as Joe Biden
[00:07:01] Previously it was done by James Austin Johnson, and he's been playing both Trump and Biden Um, uh, let's see here. How many more are there? That's six. You got two more. There's, I think you got six. I think you got six. I counted. You did. Okay. Six. So there's, there's three more. There's nine total. So you did Jason Sudeikis. Woody Harrelson. Yep. Uh, Jim Carrey. Yep. Alex Moffatt. Yep. Uh, James Nelson, Johnson.
[00:08:20] Mike, you may.
[00:08:21] Yeah.
[00:08:21] Okay.
[00:08:22] You have three more.
[00:08:22] Oh, man.
[00:08:23] That's tough.
[00:08:25] Who else kind of looks like Joe Biden.
[00:08:26] All of them did it just one time.
[00:08:28] Oh, that's going to be the new permanent one. I don't like it. So you also just don't like change. No, James dollar bills and debit cards. James Johnson's Biden
[00:09:43] is better. Yeah, of course. So the only at that. That was a decent line. All right. Moving on. Stand up monologue by Nate Bergazzi, hosting for the first time, renowned comedian and host of the weekly comedy podcast, Nate Land. Nate Bergazzi. He's not overzoned every episode either. Of Nate Land? Yeah. Because I went to seek out one.
[00:11:01] I've listened to quite a few episodes, not regularly, but I've listened to probably 10
[00:11:05] episodes. I went to seek out one recently because I was looking for something to reference in an but it gave you a good picture of what Nate Bragance's copy is like in my perfectly dry. He's gotten so big and yet he's not doing the thing that a lot of comics by their third album especially now they only can talk about airports and being on the road and being on the hotels. He's still talking about the same stuff his parents that he was talking
[00:12:20] about four albums ago and it's just as good if not better.
[00:12:23] The suburban life is really really good.
[00:12:26] He has not lost that at all.
[00:13:21] of sometimes comedians will smile or sometimes they're giving away the,
[00:13:24] they want you to laugh here soon
[00:13:25] because they're gonna smile a little bit.
[00:13:26] And then they'll step on their own stuff
[00:13:28] to get to the next one if it's not working.
[00:13:29] Exactly, and he doesn't.
[00:13:31] It actually never does.
[00:13:32] He's very patient, but also just so funny.
[00:13:36] I love this.
[00:13:37] My favorite one from this one was when he was talking
[00:13:38] about his mom going to pick up her daughter
[00:13:42] and so she meets another grandma
[00:13:44] and it's two dogs who see each other through a fence.
[00:13:47] It's gonna take a while.
[00:13:48] It's gonna take a while. The the special that the greatest average American sorry takes place out outdoors Oh, there you go. Sorry. That is the greatest average American and then it does jump to Amazon for Hello World Which is just again hilarious and now he's on tour because I'll be doing another album moving on chef Showdown Nate Barghatsy a white chef wins a soul food cooking contest
[00:15:01] Much to the shock of the judges Kenan Thompson and Punky Johnson
[00:16:05] I also don't think that N was as subtle the first couple years she was on the show. I think he actually did say no Oh, in the beginning. Yeah, I think they just slowly corrected this wodam
[00:16:09] I am so sorry and this is the kind of thing where she like let that happen for a bit
[00:16:12] But now she's correcting people kind of similar to the way that Tandy Newton used to be called Tandy
[00:16:17] But now she's going by her proper name Tanda way because that's the that's the name that she is was you know
[00:16:22] Given and but people told it a change it so it wouldn't be difficult to know that until now, but okay
[00:17:24] uh... caters to nate bergazis comedic style in the same way that the bad bunny episode like catered to him not speaking english very well
[00:17:27] it was the writers for doing that yeah cuz nate bergazis not somebody who
[00:17:31] does done sketch comedy and a lot of range yeah does not have a lot of range
[00:17:34] but seems like most of the sketches worked in his favor as far as capturing
[00:17:37] like his general vibe
[00:17:39] his timing was off a little bit on some of it but i thought he did fairly well
[00:17:43] for never doing any acting before right but i i like i like this that was Well, Keenan's, go kill yourself. Yeah, really, guys, really. Yeah. No, there was plenty of the like in this. I just, it set the tone for what they were gonna do with Nate Bragazzi, which is not mush. You know, they're just gonna let him be in the background a little bit and just like say a couple lines here and there, which is fine. I just, I guess I was hoping for that they give him
[00:19:01] some more swings.
[00:19:02] I think they kept him in the background
[00:19:03] for most of the episode.
[00:19:05] I think, I do think used another pass at the script. There's also a really bad cut towards the end of the sketch. Did you guys notice this? No, he had a knife. Ha ha ha. It's when it's so Chloe Feynman comes in and sees him and he's holding like a severed hand or something in the shed and it cuts to her reacting.
[00:20:21] And then it's like a jump cut because it's the same shot,
[00:20:25] but Pucky Johnson is suddenly know the fact that we don't use the metric system
[00:21:44] even though I don't understand it I'd be happy to make the switch just to have some semblance of like Nate Brigazi's comedy style. Travis Kelsey probably would have fumbled this just like a fucking football. Well, making out with Taylor Swift. Yeah, and not deserving any bit of it. And so yeah, and it would have had a stupid fucking mustache too. I just think that you're gonna give Nate Brigazi all the credit in the world here. And while Travis did do those things. Because he's better? You're right. And he didn't ruin the sketch
[00:23:00] and because Travis Kelsey sucks,
[00:23:01] you're absolutely right.
[00:23:02] Travis Kelsey.
[00:23:03] He's struggled a little bit with the timing on this one.
[00:23:04] Sure.
[00:23:05] Didn't ruin the sketch for me.
[00:23:06] Those were still hilarious.
[00:23:07] I like this one.
[00:23:08] I agree. All right moving on lake beach written by damn bulla introduced me James Austin Johnson Street or say no It's a idea based on a James Austin Johnson stand up sketch Where did you hear that name? Stand up sketch or sorry I stand up bit come on you can find on YouTube who told you that I actually read it on Reddit no, I did before you told me but then you told me and I thought it was sweet that you told me that
[00:24:25] Here's the thing
[00:24:26] Brad likes to do this thing where he sends us stuff that just assuming we haven't seen it and there's like a job. That's so good. So I don't think I mentioned this a while back when it actually happened, but I went to go see James Austin Johnson perform standup in Chicago over the summer. Well, what's up with the Den Theater? And so I asked you guys if you wanted to go and really go too busy with my fucking voice. Wow! And Nate does not sound like that. You know that was you.
[00:25:40] All right.
[00:25:42] And so I, so I went to go see James Austin Johnson
[00:25:44] by myself.
[00:25:45] You had a great time.
[00:25:48] I did. James Austin Johnson and Nate Burgadze sing about a beach on a lake accompanied by Dave Grohl, who's obviously the founder of the Foo Fighters. Other cast members include Devin Walker, Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Marcello Hernandez, and Molly Carney each playing different characters. I love this. We live in a lake town. There's a lot of small lakes, not only in our city.
[00:27:00] There's a lot of lakes right around us as well here in northwest Indiana. version of a, like he said, Florida, Georgia line or whatever type of song that would be a summer like. I also like that some of it wasn't really around being like redneck and it was like five people. I know 45. I don't. Yeah. So I think this was the one sketch to where if you watch Nate Brigazzi, this is the one that he cut loose.
[00:28:20] Like he's he was having fun smiling and dancing and like it really felt like a lot more outgoing than you've ever seen him before.
[00:28:25] And maybe because he also got it being from kind of the devil he's so confident yeah which which really helps in sketch comedy so yeah so I like this you love this confident football player that I know that's confident in sketch
[00:29:42] comedy skills Joe Montana yep Peyton Manning oh Peyton Manning she get I would as like characters from movies and TV shows because that struck work. But like kids don't have to adhere to this or not that. But conceptually, it's very funny to imagine friend-resher telling like normal parents like, here's what your kids can dress up as for Halloween. I agree with that. If the sketch was like, I don't know, a minute and a half long. Yeah, it did. It did. Nine minute sketch. What are we doing? Well, it's not that long, but how long was it?
[00:31:00] The little kid that played Hoda copy.
[00:31:02] Came back five days.
[00:31:03] Very funny.
[00:31:03] She was so good.
[00:31:04] Very funny.
[00:31:05] I see.
[00:31:06] Yeah, all the kids.
[00:31:07] All the kids crushed.
[00:31:08] All the kidsometer would be. It has not been all that high yet this season. This is the barometer rates based on the metrics.
[00:32:23] I think we saw the brato meter. It sounds more fun that way.
[00:32:26] I like barometer. What do you like Ben? I just thought the jokes were better than that. 50, 55. Yeah, Ben's pretty close. I would probably say like a 60, because it was higher than last year. It was a little bit better, still was not great. Just not enough connection between the two. Do you think they're fighting and feuding and just not like you mentioned? No, I honestly think the past- Being scarlet got between them. This, now I just have a great image in my head.
[00:33:41] I am.
[00:33:43] But no, I just think that these two iterations
[00:33:46] of weekend update didn't have the best punch lines. so impressed that Sarah Sherman and the writers keep coming up with ways for basically Sarah Sherman to do to shake on a note. And they keep coming up with new and different ways to do it. I'm always here for it. It never lets me down. It's fresh and just keep going guys. This is the same great bit reworked in a different character.
[00:35:01] I think one of the things that actually makes it even more amusing to me is that it could easily not be like Sarah Sherman Yeah. All right. Moving on. Airplane written by Mike DeSenzo, introduce Mooks, Jake Norban, and Ben Silva. A couple played by Devin Walker and Chloe Feynman are about to give birth on a plane while others played by Nate Bargazzi, introduce Mooks, Chloe Trost, Heidi Gardner, and Mikey Day as the pilot. Argue about which job is the hardest? The sketch also features Dave Grohl and a doctor costume. Introduce Mooks was great in this. That's, that's my thoughts on this.
[00:36:23] What did you guys think? This was the third agree. I just thought he was greatness. I really love Andrew Smoox. And this was one too where having Dave Grohl come in
[00:37:41] and having like, like, this is Halloween class was funny,
[00:37:43] but it was such an abrupt end.
[00:37:45] I was like, wait, what?
[00:37:46] What?
[00:37:46] That was it?
[00:37:47] Okay. I was with it. I was with it in the beginning. I thought it was a funny concept. But it didn't, as we talk about often, escalation. This didn't really feel like it went anywhere else. So it's kind of the same kind of thing. Like, wow, it's so weird that they're eating dog food. It's funny. Come on, keep on going higher, right? And there were a couple amusing assays. I really like, well, you got your name on the bowl. Yeah, my girlfriend got it.
[00:39:00] So she's behind this?
[00:39:01] No, she hates it.
[00:39:02] Yeah, there's some clever wording in there.
[00:39:05] But it just, yeah, it didn't feel like it was
[00:39:06] like a fully conceived miss for them. Yeah. And I paint him. All right. So let's talk a little bit about overall. How'd you like this episode? I was expecting, I was expecting more out in the very guys. I wanted him to, I know he's
[00:40:22] not an actor, but neither was, neither is Dave Grohl or babe Manning, right? I was expecting more from neighbor gets it because I was cautiously optimistic already because I knew he was not well Established in any other realm of comedy except stand up and so I didn't think he was going to be particularly great at catch Comedy's genuinely not done any acting. Yeah, he's not done guest starring. Yeah, exactly And I thought he was for the most part pretty good and like I said the fact that SNL did cater to his you know comedy cadence
[00:42:41] It was also clever. It was clever.
[00:42:42] Like, that's what I really liked it.
[00:42:43] It was original.
[00:42:44] It was good.
[00:42:45] It was observational.
[00:42:46] That was a good observation, unlike some of their political sketches lately, aren't
[00:42:50] good observations.
[00:42:51] I just really liked it.
[00:42:52] Yeah, I was happy that it was a live sketch.
[00:42:54] That was the best one because the first two episodes prerecorded sketches were the best
[00:42:59] ones.
[00:43:00] Oh, also just going back real quick to the plain sketch when Bo and Yang stands up and
[00:43:03] goes, I'm a doctor and then sit down.
[00:43:07] Not that kind of.
[00:43:08] It's was good. Yeah. It's a talk about you, Nate. It was a talk set up for me between James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman. I thought
[00:44:23] James Austin Johnson again, using an original bit any actors to help push it, they decided to delay it to March 2024.
[00:45:43] Now, what's going to be interesting about this is if the actor strike is still going on, you know what? Through the holidays, Brad?
[00:46:42] then there's a chance that they might just say, fuck it and not resolve it until after winter break.
[00:46:46] And in which case that will-
[00:46:48] Prove been right because he's been saying
[00:46:50] through the holidays since earlier this year.
[00:46:52] No, but you said that SNL wasn't gonna come back.
[00:46:54] Yeah, and you were half wrong.
[00:46:57] But the idea-
[00:46:58] Also, it was half right.
[00:46:59] But like if that happens
[00:47:01] and they don't have a deal before Christmas
[00:47:03] and they've gone to break,
[00:47:04] that means the entire TV season will be shot
[00:47:07] because they will not be able to start production and on a scenario, he does a good job. Yeah, he's a lot of fun. So it should be a good episode. And I don't think they've announced anybody else yet. They haven't, that's it. That's all we know so far. Oh, real quick about this episode. I know that we don't really talk about the music because it's all that often. However, when the Foo Fighters were on Saturday Night Live, when Christopher Walken hosted
[00:48:21] back in the 90s, I think it was the 90s or early 2000s,
[00:48:26] Dave Grohl tells a story on a podcast for a new episode. I think it's November 11th is the so we have two weeks off. We're off for a week and then we're back for right November 11th is when the episode is. I know but this coming week is like November 7th. Right. So we have two weeks off. Oh, I mean, technically, but we've got one week. No, like it's it's no, like this this coming week is
[00:49:43] the fourth, right? So we off and then we'll be back the very
[00:49:46] next week on the 11th. Yeah, that's right. There's one weekend So we have three weekends often But yeah, so check that out Ethan at Ethan underscore Anderson on Twitter or go over to blue sky I don't know I think it's just X now and definitely not it's definitely still Twitter and don't give a shit about anything else Hey Ben do you think that Tyler Joseph's gonna take that that porn stargig?
[00:51:02] You know Jurassic pork
[00:51:08] If he doesn't I will I'm in all right you can also find that's my favorite line in Jurassic pork
