[00:00:06] It's The Ten to One Podcast with your host Brad Oman, featuring Ben Conowitz and Nate Lauchs. And here's the podcast!
[00:00:20] Welcome back friends, welcome back.
[00:00:22] Welcome back everybody. Back to back episodes, Bill Burr and now Charli XCX.
[00:00:27] Yes.
[00:00:28] Ben, give me five facts about Charli XCX.
[00:00:31] She is British.
[00:00:33] Say that again.
[00:00:34] She is English?
[00:00:36] No, British.
[00:00:37] Oh sorry, she is British.
[00:00:39] She has black hair.
[00:00:41] Yes.
[00:00:41] She's a musical recording artist.
[00:00:44] She likes to use the word brat.
[00:00:46] Yes.
[00:00:47] And she was very good on this episode of Saturday Night Live.
[00:00:51] Oh, okay. A little bit of foreshadowing about what's to come in this episode.
[00:00:55] Yeah, this is the latest episode of Saturday Night Live.
[00:00:58] It is the last one before the Thanksgiving holiday.
[00:01:01] There will not be another episode next week as we head into Thanksgiving week or of Thanksgiving
[00:01:07] week. So we're going to be on break until December.
[00:01:09] Are there any great Thanksgiving sketches that you can think of in SNL lore?
[00:01:13] The Adele one comes to mind. Pre-taped sketch with Matthew McConaughey where the family
[00:01:19] is having dinner and to break up political discourse conversations, the little girl turns
[00:01:23] on Adele.
[00:01:24] Yeah, that's a good one. That is a classic. Is there any other?
[00:01:27] I get confused by the Christmas and Thanksgiving ones like the one where Billie Eilish was inviting
[00:01:34] Kate McKinnon over. That was for Christmas, right?
[00:01:36] I think that was Christmas. Yeah, because if that wasn't Thanksgiving, then that would
[00:01:40] be a good one. General holiday one. It's hilarious. Yeah, yeah.
[00:01:41] It's a good one.
[00:01:43] I can't really think of any other from history, you know, just off the top of my head.
[00:01:47] A lot more Christmas ones than Thanksgiving ones.
[00:01:49] As I was going to say, Thanksgiving isn't a huge thing for SNL.
[00:01:53] I mean, I'm sure Adam Sandler probably has a Thanksgiving song, right?
[00:01:57] I think it's a turkey song, yeah.
[00:01:58] A gobble-gobble-doo and a gobble-gobble-gobble-gee.
[00:02:01] Yeah, I think that is. Something like that.
[00:02:02] Yeah, let's have turkey, you and me.
[00:02:04] Yeah, exactly. I think that's what it is, actually.
[00:02:06] We faked an Adam Sandler song and we got it right.
[00:02:09] It's a real one.
[00:02:11] But yeah, no.
[00:02:12] So, I was surprised when they announced that Charli XCX was hosting for the first time
[00:02:18] and pulling double duty as the host and musical guest because, I think as we mentioned on
[00:02:23] an episode before, I was not familiar with her skills as a performer other than her singing.
[00:02:28] I knew she was a very popular singer, a big pop star right now, quite a big deal on the charts
[00:02:33] and everything, but was not aware that she had any acting capabilities or interest in comedy
[00:02:39] or anything like that.
[00:02:40] But I will say, before we get into it in detail, I was pretty impressed by what I saw from her.
[00:02:47] Do you guys remember the first episode she was on?
[00:02:49] I do not.
[00:02:50] Gosh, no.
[00:02:51] I'm sure I read it at some point and then it just went out my ears.
[00:02:53] She was on a holiday episode, Christmas probably, episode December.
[00:02:58] December 13th, 2014.
[00:03:01] 2014?
[00:03:02] Yeah.
[00:03:03] No way.
[00:03:03] 10 years ago?
[00:03:04] She hasn't been around for 10 years.
[00:03:05] Is that right?
[00:03:06] She was 10 years old.
[00:03:07] Yeah, there's no way she's been around for 10 years.
[00:03:08] How old is she?
[00:03:09] Charlie XCX has got to be like 24.
[00:03:12] Is she really?
[00:03:13] 25?
[00:03:13] I can't imagine.
[00:03:14] I'm going to look it up right now.
[00:03:15] Yeah, look it up.
[00:03:16] I thought she was on Charlie XCX Age.
[00:03:22] We do Google sometimes when we do this show, so just to let people know.
[00:03:28] She's 32 years old, so she would have been 22.
[00:03:31] So it's not impossible.
[00:03:32] Exactly.
[00:03:33] It's incredibly impossible.
[00:03:34] But I don't even think that she was famous 10 years ago, though.
[00:03:38] That's what I don't know.
[00:03:39] I thought it was 2014.
[00:03:40] In 2010, she signed a recording contract with Asylum Records, releasing a series of singles
[00:03:45] and mixtapes throughout 2011 and 2012.
[00:03:47] Was that right?
[00:03:47] That did the right research.
[00:03:48] Nate is right.
[00:03:49] And she was on SNL in December of 2014.
[00:03:52] Thank you.
[00:03:53] Thank you, guys.
[00:03:54] She contributed to the hook and bridge to Fancy by Iggy Azalea.
[00:03:59] Yeah, this episode...
[00:04:01] Oh, Boom Clap is her song.
[00:04:03] Okay.
[00:04:03] How's that one go?
[00:04:05] Boom clap...
[00:04:08] Whoa, that's way too much.
[00:04:10] I don't know that one.
[00:04:10] That's the chickens from the Muppets doing Charlie XCX's song.
[00:04:13] That was way too much.
[00:04:14] And then she was on...
[00:04:15] So that was season 40.
[00:04:16] She was on in season 47.
[00:04:18] She was scheduled to be on in season 47.
[00:04:21] What happened?
[00:04:23] The second wave of the pandemic.
[00:04:25] Paul Rudd's episode.
[00:04:27] Yeah.
[00:04:27] She was the musical guest when they canceled.
[00:04:30] So interesting enough, so then she was on again in March 5th, 2022 with Oscar Isaac
[00:04:36] as the makeup there.
[00:04:38] But interesting there that the first two episodes she was on as a musical guest were both holiday
[00:04:44] episodes.
[00:04:44] And here she is again.
[00:04:46] Not necessarily in a holiday episode.
[00:04:47] Charlie XMUSCX.
[00:04:50] Oh, there it is.
[00:04:52] Oh, there it is.
[00:04:52] Christmas.
[00:04:53] Christmas.
[00:04:53] But I wonder if their experiences with her, maybe in that Oscar Isaac episode was enough
[00:04:59] to say, oh, I think you could actually...
[00:05:01] Martin Freeman episode.
[00:05:02] No, but she was on in 2022 is what I'm saying.
[00:05:04] Oh, gotcha.
[00:05:05] And so like, hey, you could actually do this hosting as well.
[00:05:09] Well, there you go.
[00:05:09] That's very interesting.
[00:05:11] I'm just kind of surprised that she's been around for that long because I didn't even
[00:05:14] realize.
[00:05:14] Yeah.
[00:05:15] I think every young female recording artist that is about that age, I'm like 22 to 23.
[00:05:21] Yeah.
[00:05:21] I'm so old these days, I have no idea.
[00:05:23] But she looks, of course, incredible, but I would never have said 32 ever.
[00:05:27] Yeah.
[00:05:27] She looks so young.
[00:05:28] Is she getting into acting at all?
[00:05:30] Brad, you're the...
[00:05:31] I don't think so.
[00:05:31] I haven't heard anything about her doing movies or anything like that.
[00:05:33] You're Charlie's Angels XCX?
[00:05:36] Nevermind.
[00:05:36] Okay.
[00:05:36] Actually, she has been in some films.
[00:05:39] Name them.
[00:05:42] Ugly Dolls.
[00:05:43] That was an animated movie.
[00:05:45] Voice over.
[00:05:45] Exactly.
[00:05:46] And then she's got...
[00:05:48] She's in the upcoming remake of Faces of Death, starring Barbie Ferreira.
[00:05:56] Oh, okay.
[00:05:57] She's from Euphoria.
[00:05:58] Decker Montgomery.
[00:06:00] Oh yeah, he's from Power Rangers.
[00:06:01] Josie Tada.
[00:06:02] I don't know who that is.
[00:06:03] She's on Euphoria before you.
[00:06:05] Yeah.
[00:06:05] And then she's in an upcoming film called I Want Your Sex.
[00:06:11] Starring Olivia Wilde, Cooper Hoffman, Charlie XCX, and Daveed Diggs, Mason Gooding.
[00:06:17] Okay.
[00:06:17] And then she's in another upcoming movie called Sacrifice, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Evans,
[00:06:24] Selma Hayek.
[00:06:25] All right.
[00:06:26] And so she's...
[00:06:26] She's on the up-up.
[00:06:27] Yeah, I'm clearly getting into some...
[00:06:29] Thank you for stopping by Nate's IMDB corner on the 10 to 1 podcast.
[00:06:32] And then she's...
[00:06:33] Charlie XCX.
[00:06:35] Oh.
[00:06:36] She's doing some stuff, guys.
[00:06:37] That's all.
[00:06:37] That's all.
[00:06:37] So...
[00:06:38] Well, let's Charlie XCX out of that window.
[00:06:40] Jump right into it.
[00:06:42] All right.
[00:06:42] Here we go.
[00:06:43] Trump and Biden meeting cold open.
[00:06:46] Joe Biden, played by Dana Carvey, welcomes President-elect Donald Trump, played by James
[00:06:50] Austin Johnson, to the White House, but is interrupted by Matt Getz.
[00:06:55] Matt Getz.
[00:06:56] Getz?
[00:06:56] Getz?
[00:06:57] Gates.
[00:06:57] Who cares?
[00:06:57] He's a piece of shit.
[00:06:58] Played by Sarah Sherman.
[00:06:59] And...
[00:07:00] Well, I mean, this Sarah Sherman character might come back a couple of months soon.
[00:07:03] Matt Gates is...
[00:07:04] And Robert F. Kennedy Jr., played by Alec Baldwin.
[00:07:06] This could also include performances by Chloe Fineman, Andrew Desmukes, Ashley Padilla,
[00:07:11] and Emile Walken.
[00:07:14] So, I assume Dana Carvey's almost done playing Joe Biden.
[00:07:19] Right?
[00:07:19] This might be his last one.
[00:07:20] I mean, we'll see.
[00:07:20] I don't know.
[00:07:22] I...
[00:07:22] He lives there, though.
[00:07:23] I don't know about you guys, but it seems like James Austin Johnson is done playing Trump.
[00:07:26] Yeah.
[00:07:27] He does seem terrible.
[00:07:28] He was really phoning this one in, obviously.
[00:07:30] Well, yeah.
[00:07:31] Remember the last week, in the episode where he comes back and he's like strong Trump
[00:07:35] or something.
[00:07:36] Yeah.
[00:07:36] And he just kind of rolls his eyes like...
[00:07:38] He is over it, I think.
[00:07:39] I think he's done.
[00:07:40] I mean, it's just...
[00:07:41] I mean, we're all done with it, honestly.
[00:07:44] Except for you, people out there who are racist.
[00:07:46] It is unfortunate for James Austin Johnson was just...
[00:07:49] He was praying on a lot of different levels that he'd be done.
[00:07:52] And now he's got to do it for four more years.
[00:07:54] At the same time, though, part of me does wonder if it can't...
[00:07:57] Because I didn't actually watch the actual meeting between them.
[00:08:01] I didn't actually watch the episode.
[00:08:03] No, I didn't actually watch the actual meeting between Trump and Biden.
[00:08:06] And so maybe he was being subdued Trump because that's how Trump was.
[00:08:09] Yeah.
[00:08:09] That was how Trump was.
[00:08:10] Well, then there you go.
[00:08:11] He was a professional in that meeting for some reason.
[00:08:13] Well, I don't know if we have to go that far.
[00:08:14] No, it was.
[00:08:14] It was like...
[00:08:15] He acted professionally.
[00:08:16] Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
[00:08:16] Because he's never been a professional.
[00:08:18] It was like...
[00:08:19] He's just tired.
[00:08:19] He was like, you know how elections get.
[00:08:21] They're hard on people, but it's good for the country to come together kind of thing.
[00:08:25] You're like, who is this?
[00:08:26] Yeah, what?
[00:08:26] Why do you care now?
[00:08:27] Someone gave him a horse tranquilizer before that meeting probably.
[00:08:31] I have the best horses.
[00:08:33] Okay.
[00:08:34] Did love...
[00:08:36] I don't know if her performance is perfect or anything.
[00:08:39] Sarah Sherman's eyebrows.
[00:08:40] Good God.
[00:08:42] It was so funny.
[00:08:43] All she has to do is stare with those creepy eyebrows and she looks just like Matt Gaetz.
[00:08:48] It's so unnerving.
[00:08:49] The only thing that she could have done to make the performance better was be sexually inappropriate with a teenage girl.
[00:08:56] Because the look is amazing.
[00:08:58] I hope that they use her so often for this.
[00:09:01] Incredible.
[00:09:01] And she posted a photo...
[00:09:03] It's called a doppelgagger.
[00:09:05] She posted a photo on Instagram saying that she had to do the Kubrick stare on SNL and she posted the picture from the sketch along with a picture next to Jack Nicholson from The Shining.
[00:09:15] And she looks just like Jack Nicholson from The Shining too.
[00:09:18] Yeah.
[00:09:19] But no, I would definitely love to see more of her doing that.
[00:09:25] And otherwise...
[00:09:25] And also that was funny, right?
[00:09:27] That was taking the politics of it all and making it absurd.
[00:09:32] Yeah.
[00:09:32] Which I will share.
[00:09:35] That was my favorite part of it.
[00:09:36] If you're gonna do this, do something absurd with it.
[00:09:41] Yeah.
[00:09:41] And just in the way she looked was absurd.
[00:09:44] But still looked kind of like him, right?
[00:09:46] Oh yeah.
[00:09:46] It was enough to connect.
[00:09:48] Yeah.
[00:09:49] But she added something funny to it.
[00:09:51] The rest of it was okay.
[00:09:52] It wasn't bad.
[00:09:53] It wasn't great.
[00:09:54] I think Alec Baldwin does a decent RFK.
[00:09:56] The voice is solid, you know?
[00:09:58] And he's an older man.
[00:09:59] Yeah.
[00:09:59] Yeah.
[00:09:59] It looks like him.
[00:10:00] The back and forth between Trump and Biden was whatever.
[00:10:03] You know, not anything super exciting.
[00:10:05] No.
[00:10:05] And do you ever feel like Dana Carvey also wants to make something happen really badly?
[00:10:09] And so he can be a little bit of a try hard.
[00:10:12] I also feel like the greatest strength in some of these impressions can sometimes be their greatest weakness.
[00:10:18] Only because the vibe of SNL and how you utilize impressions has changed somewhat on SNL.
[00:10:25] And he comes from a time when impressions were a lot more based around like catch phrases.
[00:10:32] Yeah.
[00:10:32] As opposed to like doing the most accurate impression.
[00:10:35] And so while his impression is good, it does rely on him saying the same things over and over again.
[00:10:42] And now we've heard this for months now.
[00:10:43] Yeah.
[00:10:44] And it can be a little tiring from time to time.
[00:10:46] Yeah.
[00:10:46] I think it's time to be done.
[00:10:48] Yeah.
[00:10:48] I hope it is anyway.
[00:10:50] But you know we're going to get a lot more Trump coming forward.
[00:10:53] Yeah.
[00:10:53] I will say there's a sketch in this episode, while not particularly great, I wish that they would do more things like that in order to satirize what is happening.
[00:11:01] I can't wait to get to it.
[00:11:03] In politics.
[00:11:03] So we'll talk about that in a little bit.
[00:11:05] Hosting for the first time, three-time musical guest Charlie XCX teaches everyone the meaning of Brat while making a cameo appearance alongside longtime former cast member Kyle Mooney.
[00:11:17] Later this week, Brad and I are actually going to meet Kyle Mooney at a showing of his new film on Wednesday night, I think?
[00:11:25] Yeah, that's true.
[00:11:26] Yeah.
[00:11:26] His new movie Y2K is coming out here in early December and we're going to a screening and he's supposed to be there for a little Q&A.
[00:11:34] Very cool.
[00:11:34] So that should be pretty fun.
[00:11:34] Yeah.
[00:11:34] So we're excited about that.
[00:11:36] I was going to see Kyle Mooney back.
[00:11:37] It was.
[00:11:38] It was.
[00:11:39] I miss him a lot on the show.
[00:11:41] He's one of my favorites.
[00:11:42] But did you know what Brat was, Ben?
[00:11:45] No.
[00:11:46] I had a vague idea.
[00:11:47] Yeah.
[00:11:47] I was going to say, it's a placeholder for Smurf.
[00:11:51] That's right.
[00:11:52] I'll say this though.
[00:11:53] I don't know anything about Charlie XCX.
[00:11:56] I mean, other than I've heard of her, but.
[00:11:57] Well, she's British.
[00:11:59] British.
[00:11:59] She's got black hair.
[00:12:00] Yeah.
[00:12:01] She's a musical recording artist.
[00:12:03] I forgot the other thing I said.
[00:12:04] And she was very good.
[00:12:06] Boom!
[00:12:06] Clap!
[00:12:07] But she's got a charm to her.
[00:12:09] She's very charming.
[00:12:10] I think she's delightful.
[00:12:11] Very delightful.
[00:12:11] I really liked her.
[00:12:13] Like she brought the charm.
[00:12:15] She did what you should do as somebody that's not a comedian or a sketch artist or even an
[00:12:22] actor, right?
[00:12:23] She's starting to act, but she's not had a lot.
[00:12:25] She just brought the charisma and it was fun.
[00:12:28] She didn't seem nervous.
[00:12:30] Nope.
[00:12:30] She seemed very.
[00:12:30] She owned the stage.
[00:12:32] Paused and professional.
[00:12:34] And everything was good.
[00:12:36] I wonder if though recording artists often do fairly well not seeming nervous, but because
[00:12:40] I mean, they, that's what they do.
[00:12:42] They do still perform all the time.
[00:12:44] Oh, of course.
[00:12:45] Being in front of a live audience constantly does help with that.
[00:12:48] But a lot of them can struggle because they're not doing the thing that they do, right?
[00:12:52] They're, they're not singing.
[00:12:54] So it, oh, the camera's on me and there's nobody talking.
[00:12:56] There's, I'm the only one here.
[00:12:58] Charlie XCX was incredibly, uh, well put together as far as that.
[00:13:03] I would, I had no problems here whatsoever.
[00:13:05] Yeah.
[00:13:06] Anything else to add?
[00:13:07] No.
[00:13:08] Okay.
[00:13:08] Because there wasn't that much to it.
[00:13:10] Yeah.
[00:13:10] It wasn't a great, but it was fine.
[00:13:12] It was good.
[00:13:13] All right.
[00:13:13] Baby Moon, Charlie XCX, Heidi Gardner, Ego Wodham, and Sarah Sherman play friends who sing
[00:13:18] about their Baby Moon trip at their friend, Chloe Fineman's baby shower.
[00:13:24] Andrew Jus Mewks plays the husband.
[00:13:26] Marcel Hernandez plays Domingo, bringing back Domingo.
[00:13:29] And Ashley Padilla plays the host.
[00:13:32] I kind of, I, I, so they bring, they did this a couple episodes ago.
[00:13:36] It wasn't that long ago, but I almost would have preferred to see Kyle Mooney as a guest
[00:13:41] in this because he does so well as the husband, the, the, the kind of, but they had to carry
[00:13:46] over.
[00:13:47] I know.
[00:13:48] But we know Brad.
[00:13:49] I know.
[00:13:50] It's the logistics of the podcast.
[00:13:52] We know.
[00:13:52] So they did this not long ago.
[00:13:54] It's the logistics of the show.
[00:13:55] Don't worry about it.
[00:13:56] They did this not long ago with Domingo.
[00:13:58] And obviously it kind of, it actually became a little bit of a TikTok sensation.
[00:14:02] Yeah.
[00:14:02] Apparently it went viral, which is why it made it into that one TikTok sketch they did.
[00:14:07] The one that wasn't very good.
[00:14:08] And so I was surprised to see it come back so soon.
[00:14:11] That's what I was going to say.
[00:14:12] I'm not surprised they brought it back.
[00:14:14] I'm a little surprised they brought it back so soon.
[00:14:16] But I suppose strike while the iron is hot.
[00:14:19] And I think honestly, this version I felt was better than the other version.
[00:14:24] I agree.
[00:14:24] As far as how well the song came together.
[00:14:26] Yeah.
[00:14:27] It did.
[00:14:27] It seemed, and maybe just because it's their second time of doing it, they kind of knew
[00:14:31] what they were doing a little more with this.
[00:14:33] Yeah.
[00:14:33] And they kept it extremely outlandish and you know, they escalated just fine.
[00:14:39] It was very good.
[00:14:40] And there's also a, this is a sketch that has a decent amount of physical comedy because
[00:14:44] you're doing a lot of facial comedy work, right?
[00:14:48] Andrew Smukes needs to show like, what?
[00:14:51] There's a lot going on there.
[00:14:53] And it also I think requires a lot of the production.
[00:14:57] And it felt like they had this time.
[00:15:00] It was hitting every one.
[00:15:00] The timing was better than this one.
[00:15:01] The timing was perfect, which again is another element to the show that we don't, we talk
[00:15:06] about sometimes, but it has to be perfect.
[00:15:08] We really only bring it up when they make a mistake, right?
[00:15:11] So when it goes well, we don't give them enough credit.
[00:15:13] Yeah.
[00:15:13] And I think that the song, it's maybe lent itself better to like what they were accomplishing.
[00:15:17] It was a nice touch having them spelling out Domingo and the YMCA letter fashion.
[00:15:22] That was fun.
[00:15:23] So yeah, I think it worked out.
[00:15:25] Ben, do you know who sings the song that they did this one?
[00:15:27] The Village People.
[00:15:29] That's YMCA.
[00:15:30] Yep.
[00:15:30] That's what I got it right.
[00:15:31] Who sings this song?
[00:15:32] This song?
[00:15:33] This isn't an original?
[00:15:34] No.
[00:15:35] No, this is Chapel Road, right?
[00:15:36] Ah, yep.
[00:15:37] Nate's in touch with the youths.
[00:15:39] Okay.
[00:15:39] Is that like another JoJo Siwa person?
[00:15:41] H-O-T-T-O-G-O.
[00:15:45] Hot Go?
[00:15:46] Hot To Go.
[00:15:47] Hot To Go.
[00:15:48] Hot To Go.
[00:15:48] Okay.
[00:15:49] My daughter loves Chapel Road.
[00:15:50] All right.
[00:15:50] Fair enough.
[00:15:50] Everyone loves Chapel Road right now.
[00:15:52] Cool.
[00:15:53] Apparently she's got a great album.
[00:15:54] I'm going to have to start listening.
[00:15:56] It's not for you.
[00:15:57] Okay.
[00:15:57] Not for me.
[00:15:58] Hey guys, it was told it's not for me.
[00:16:00] No.
[00:16:00] Overall, very good sketch.
[00:16:02] I liked it better than the first one.
[00:16:04] I did.
[00:16:05] As soon as I saw what it was, I was like, oh, they're going to force this on us again?
[00:16:08] But then it was fine.
[00:16:09] Like I honestly, they had to overcome it.
[00:16:11] Yeah.
[00:16:11] They won me back after I was initially was like, mm.
[00:16:14] Yep.
[00:16:14] So I do think it brings up an interesting thing where there are sometimes sketches.
[00:16:21] The first one, we liked it fine.
[00:16:22] It was fine.
[00:16:23] Right?
[00:16:24] Marcelo Hernandez did a great job.
[00:16:25] But I don't think the three of us would have said this is one of the best sketches.
[00:16:29] Oh yeah.
[00:16:30] No, definitely not.
[00:16:30] But what's interesting is-
[00:16:31] Wasn't even my favorite of that episode.
[00:16:33] True.
[00:16:34] What determined the repeat for this, I think-
[00:16:37] Was the audience.
[00:16:39] Was the audience.
[00:16:39] Is the TikToks.
[00:16:41] The digital audience levels.
[00:16:42] And that happens too.
[00:16:43] Because like honestly, and this actually just came up recently because I just started listening
[00:16:47] to the four episode run of Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend where they brought in Kevin Nealon
[00:16:52] and Dana Carvey and Robert Smigel to talk about the Hans and Franz movie that they never made.
[00:16:58] Oh, that was a while ago though, right?
[00:16:59] So you're going back to-
[00:17:00] Yeah, I never listened to them because I'm listening to those four episodes now.
[00:17:04] And Smigel talks about how like the-
[00:17:06] When they did the original first two Hans and Franz's, they didn't really fully have
[00:17:10] a conceptual idea of like what the characters were other than they were Arnold Schwarzenegger's
[00:17:15] cousins and like they were strong.
[00:17:16] And like it evolved after that because they really found like the niche of like what the
[00:17:20] funniest thing for the characters to do was.
[00:17:22] And he even like recalls too, like the first Wayne's World wasn't a home run.
[00:17:26] You know, they figured it out as it went on.
[00:17:28] Right.
[00:17:28] So, you know, it's one of those things where sometimes you'll get a sketch that like,
[00:17:31] oh, that worked.
[00:17:32] Let's see if we can do it again and make it better.
[00:17:34] To take a five minute sketch and turn it into a 130 minute movie as we've seen watching
[00:17:39] some of these SNL movies-
[00:17:40] That's crazy.
[00:17:40] It's really hard.
[00:17:41] Yeah.
[00:17:41] But also, we live now in an era where, you know, even though I don't watch The Office,
[00:17:47] I know for a fact that so many people have talked about it, it might not have gotten a
[00:17:52] second season based on the first season if you made it today.
[00:17:55] Because it wasn't a smash hit right out of the gate.
[00:17:57] Oh, it wasn't.
[00:17:57] Yeah, it didn't.
[00:17:58] I mean, it honestly almost didn't get a second season when it wasn't.
[00:18:01] Exactly.
[00:18:01] And so, and that's the tail end of when studios were-
[00:18:04] Which is really sad, honestly.
[00:18:05] The networks were giving things time to grow their audiences.
[00:18:08] Yeah.
[00:18:08] Now it's either you're a smash hit out the gate or you're done.
[00:18:11] Yeah.
[00:18:11] And you better be viral.
[00:18:12] SNL is a victim of that as well where, again, you might try a sketch three or four times
[00:18:17] back in the day to see if there's something that you can change about it.
[00:18:20] Now, if you try it twice and it really doesn't work, you're not probably going to get a third
[00:18:23] one.
[00:18:23] Yeah.
[00:18:24] And there's been other-
[00:18:25] Unless you're Bowen Yang with the Stewie Griffin t-shirt on.
[00:18:29] What's that character's name?
[00:18:30] I'm like, well, they keep doing it.
[00:18:31] I'm like, why?
[00:18:31] It's interesting-
[00:18:33] Stop doing that one.
[00:18:35] I mean, I think the media and digital interactions do impact things.
[00:18:38] What was the Christmas movie last year with Paul Giamatti?
[00:18:41] The Holdovers.
[00:18:42] The Holdovers.
[00:18:43] The three of us loved that film.
[00:18:45] Great film.
[00:18:45] It was a great film.
[00:18:48] And I remember seeing, and Brad, I don't think it was just my algorithm, but on Twitter
[00:18:53] at the time, it was going all over.
[00:18:54] People were like, this is a great movie.
[00:18:56] People need to see this movie.
[00:18:57] And I think it lent to the longevity of this film staying in the theaters and getting some
[00:19:03] more recognition.
[00:19:04] Because I remember when it released, it wasn't the biggest deal at the time.
[00:19:08] Yeah.
[00:19:09] And how digital interactions can have a robust impact on kind of how things live in the cultural
[00:19:17] zeitgeist.
[00:19:18] Yeah.
[00:19:18] For sure.
[00:19:20] All right.
[00:19:20] Moving on.
[00:19:22] Oh, Wicked.
[00:19:23] Sorry.
[00:19:23] Wicked auditions.
[00:19:25] Charlie XCX played by Bowen Yang.
[00:19:27] Troy Sivan played by Charlie XCX.
[00:19:30] Martha Stewart played by Chloe Fineman.
[00:19:33] Al Pacino played by Dana Carvey.
[00:19:36] Sebastian Maniscalco.
[00:19:38] Thank you.
[00:19:39] Maniscalco played by Marcel Hernandez.
[00:19:41] Jojo Siwa played by Chloe Fineman again.
[00:19:44] Bernie Sanders played by Sarah Sherman.
[00:19:46] Great Bernie Sanders, by the way.
[00:19:47] Sydney Sweeney played again by Chloe Fineman.
[00:19:51] And more.
[00:19:51] She's got some talent.
[00:19:53] And Heidi Gardner auditioned for Wicked, which is coming out.
[00:19:56] I think we released this.
[00:19:57] It's coming out in a couple days, right?
[00:19:59] Yeah, it'll be out this week.
[00:20:01] So they've done this many, many times.
[00:20:03] They did this, I mean, almost, what, since the early 2000s, maybe?
[00:20:08] Even before then, I think.
[00:20:09] Did they do it in the 90s?
[00:20:10] Yeah, I think they were doing it as early as the mid to late 90s.
[00:20:13] But they have not done one in quite a while.
[00:20:15] It's been a little while.
[00:20:15] I want to say the last one they did was probably for one of the Star Wars movies.
[00:20:18] And these are easy sketches.
[00:20:20] These are sketches where the cast members get to do their best impressions.
[00:20:23] Yeah, it's like a cavalcade of celebrity impressions.
[00:20:26] Hey, what are you working on right now?
[00:20:27] I've got this thing going on, right?
[00:20:29] Bill Hader was always great at this.
[00:20:31] He was.
[00:20:32] And the nice thing is you don't have to have a complete impression.
[00:20:35] You just have to have a phrase.
[00:20:37] Yeah.
[00:20:37] Right.
[00:20:39] What did you guys think of this iteration of it?
[00:20:41] I think it made me feel older than any sketch on SNL has in a long time.
[00:20:45] I was literally thinking the same thing.
[00:20:46] I just saw it and I went, oh, Bill Hader's not going to do this.
[00:20:49] And I got grumpy for a second.
[00:20:51] And also, I was like, I don't care about half these people.
[00:20:54] I don't need to see impressions of them either.
[00:20:57] Yeah, Fran Leibovitz.
[00:20:59] That was such an obscure reference to do and Leibovitz.
[00:21:06] Good for Bowen Yang for getting it on.
[00:21:08] They were in a room where anybody got anything else?
[00:21:10] He's like, I kind of got a Fran Leibovitz.
[00:21:12] Yeah, it just feels like I miss, you need someone like Hader who's bringing in an Alan Alda impression
[00:21:19] or something like that.
[00:21:20] These fun throwbacks.
[00:21:21] But this felt like a cavalcade of some of the most recent figures in pop culture.
[00:21:26] Was there any that you didn't think were that great?
[00:21:28] I don't know.
[00:21:28] I mean, I know why they did it, but it just feels so tired to have Dana Carvey doing Al Pacino.
[00:21:36] And it wasn't even that good, to be honest.
[00:21:38] It's not that good.
[00:21:39] And Bill Hader already done it.
[00:21:40] By the way, Dana Carvey, one of the best impressions of all time.
[00:21:43] I don't want to disrespect the man, but...
[00:21:46] No, he's one of the best impressions.
[00:21:48] It's like, you brought Al Pacino.
[00:21:49] That's so weird to me.
[00:21:51] Like, I would have much rather them just bring George Bush in.
[00:21:53] He's still alive, right?
[00:21:56] H.W. Bush?
[00:21:56] Yeah.
[00:21:57] What about...
[00:21:58] I didn't think Chloe Feynman, who's again, a top 10 probably impressionist on SNL of all
[00:22:05] time.
[00:22:05] I didn't think her Sydney Sweeney was that great.
[00:22:07] Well, I just don't think that Sydney Sweeney has something that you easily can capture
[00:22:11] an impersonation.
[00:22:13] That's wrong!
[00:22:14] I mean, her on Chloe Feynman's Instagram, which if you've not seen this, you need to go
[00:22:19] to find Chloe Feynman's Instagram because she herself is like, when I...
[00:22:23] She's like, I don't have a lot of boob.
[00:22:25] But she's like, but I have something.
[00:22:26] But I have something.
[00:22:27] But when we need to have more boob, here's what I do.
[00:22:29] And it's a massive fake breast setup that is full nude on the...
[00:22:34] Stuck on her body.
[00:22:35] Yeah, it's so jarring.
[00:22:36] Was that her doing this?
[00:22:37] Yeah, it was just so crazy.
[00:22:38] I don't know if she needed that for this.
[00:22:40] It would make sense.
[00:22:41] Because I didn't see anything that she was doing that with.
[00:22:43] I think that that was for that, yeah.
[00:22:45] It could have been for anything.
[00:22:46] I mean, it makes sense for Sydney Sweeney.
[00:22:49] No, no, it would.
[00:22:50] But I don't know if this was...
[00:22:52] I thought of that at the time.
[00:22:53] Guys, what are we doing here?
[00:22:53] What did you think of Marcelo Hernandez's Sebastian Maniscalco?
[00:22:57] Oh my God.
[00:22:57] It's perfect.
[00:22:57] I thought it was pretty good.
[00:22:58] Absolutely perfect.
[00:22:59] And so Ashley's never...
[00:23:01] My girlfriend's Ashley, when I watched that together, she's like, who is that?
[00:23:03] Because she's never seen him just stand up.
[00:23:05] I was like, if we turned on Sebastian right now, you'd be like, oh, they're exactly the
[00:23:09] same.
[00:23:09] Yeah.
[00:23:10] He is so good at that impression.
[00:23:12] Yeah, he did a great job.
[00:23:13] It just didn't feel like it was particularly good, I guess.
[00:23:18] I don't know.
[00:23:18] The Bad Bunny one is like, okay, can we get that in English?
[00:23:21] No.
[00:23:22] Yeah.
[00:23:22] I don't know.
[00:23:22] Just like a lot of times back, maybe I'm just old, but it seemed like they were going
[00:23:27] for the joke a little bit more this time around rather than just doing an impression.
[00:23:31] I don't know.
[00:23:32] And also in the older audition sketches, they would at least have them doing lines from the
[00:23:37] movies and stuff.
[00:23:38] And this just felt like they were just doing the impression and saying whatever, you know?
[00:23:41] Right.
[00:23:41] A little bit.
[00:23:42] A little bit.
[00:23:43] Which is too bad because I didn't think this was great and I actually do love this setup.
[00:23:48] I love the people doing the impressions.
[00:23:51] I'm going to say this.
[00:23:52] I didn't love it, but do it again.
[00:23:54] Yeah.
[00:23:55] Because I still love this iteration of it.
[00:23:57] You know, I still love it when they do this.
[00:23:59] Yep.
[00:23:59] I agree.
[00:24:00] I agree.
[00:24:00] All right.
[00:24:03] Moving on.
[00:24:03] Go see Wicked, everybody.
[00:24:06] Thanksgiving Baking Championship 2024.
[00:24:10] Contestants Charlie XCX, Kyle Mooney, Heidi Gardner, and Marcelo Hernandez compete in a
[00:24:16] baking competition show to create Thanksgiving themed cakes.
[00:24:20] Andrew Smukes plays the role of host.
[00:24:22] The sketch also includes Edgar Wodham, Michael Longfellow, and Ashley Padilla as the judges.
[00:24:28] Brad, let's start with you.
[00:24:28] What did you think of this one?
[00:24:30] I thought it was fine.
[00:24:32] I think they've done it better before.
[00:24:35] There were some nice touches.
[00:24:37] I did think the turkey cake with the spread eagle setup was pretty funny.
[00:24:41] Part of me wonders if it was initially more graphic where the legs were spread and they had to tone it down because it felt oddly lacking detail.
[00:24:50] But I also wonder if maybe it's just because they knew that they were going to have the stuffing come out of it.
[00:24:54] I think the stuffing comes out of it and that's a big blank canvas to do that.
[00:24:56] But also you could tell what it was.
[00:24:58] Right.
[00:24:58] So it was pretty grotesque.
[00:25:01] I mean, it was funny.
[00:25:02] It was.
[00:25:02] They have a problem every single time they do this sketch.
[00:25:04] There's always because there's a lot of moving parts here literally and figuratively.
[00:25:09] Yeah.
[00:25:09] With like the cuts and things like that, but also the mechanicals and all that stuff.
[00:25:13] This sketch, they've never fully dialed it in where it's been perfect.
[00:25:18] Yeah.
[00:25:18] It's always run into some sort of problem.
[00:25:19] This time around, you know, the mechanics of Heidi Gardner's bird were working already.
[00:25:25] Right.
[00:25:25] Which is whatever.
[00:25:26] It's fine, but it does take you out of it a little bit.
[00:25:27] But then having Kyle Mooney as the fourth contestant, I don't think you needed that.
[00:25:31] I think that it was.
[00:25:32] It did feel like a little too much, but I did like.
[00:25:34] I liked it.
[00:25:35] I did like Kyle Mooney's thing.
[00:25:36] Oh yeah.
[00:25:36] And the main part is a black deal.
[00:25:37] Yeah.
[00:25:38] There's enough there to make it worth it.
[00:25:40] But again, going from the one and I, and I liked that they're like, yeah, you just want
[00:25:44] it too much.
[00:25:45] Like that's funny.
[00:25:46] Yeah.
[00:25:47] There's all the pieces are there for this one to make it really great.
[00:25:51] And it just wasn't, but it, but it was solid.
[00:25:53] And I did laugh, especially the damn thing like shot the stuffing across or whatever.
[00:25:58] That was crazy.
[00:25:59] Um, but yeah, no overall enough to like about this obviously, but it just wasn't a home
[00:26:03] run.
[00:26:03] Yeah.
[00:26:04] I thought, I thought it was pretty good.
[00:26:05] Not great.
[00:26:06] Yeah, I agree.
[00:26:07] It was fine.
[00:26:08] All right.
[00:26:08] Moving on SNL digital short.
[00:26:11] Let's get the, um, the team back together here.
[00:26:14] Right.
[00:26:15] Here I go.
[00:26:16] Feaching featuring Charlie XCX, a man portrayed by Andy Samberg and a woman.
[00:26:21] Charlie XCX sing a song about their love for snitching.
[00:26:25] The sketch also includes Colin Jost, James Austin Johnson, Devin Walker, Ashley Padilla
[00:26:31] and Emile Walkham, all of whom play various roles in the sketch.
[00:26:35] So I wanted to bring this up because please don't destroy was featured in and a sketch
[00:26:44] by please don't destroy.
[00:26:46] And it was bumped.
[00:26:49] And it was, it was legit cut for time.
[00:26:53] Uh, where it was a cup for time where they thought it was going to get included.
[00:26:56] That's what I'm saying.
[00:26:56] Cause they would not have done that.
[00:26:57] Yeah.
[00:26:58] And for a second when the SNL digital short thing came up, I was excited cause I was like,
[00:27:02] Oh shit, we get an SNL digital short and a please don't destroy video.
[00:27:05] Yeah.
[00:27:06] I guess not.
[00:27:06] And so now we know the hierarchy.
[00:27:10] Also.
[00:27:11] Yeah.
[00:27:11] You're, you're, you're, please don't destroy.
[00:27:13] It can be back here next week.
[00:27:14] Well, to be fair, it's, and it's not even necessarily a hierarchy, but like, but as they've established
[00:27:17] on lonely Island and Seth Meyers podcast, the pre tapes sort of function aside from just
[00:27:22] being funny themselves.
[00:27:23] They want those to be good sketches, but primarily Lauren wants the pre tapes to give the time
[00:27:28] in between to change sets when they actually need it.
[00:27:31] Right.
[00:27:31] Yep.
[00:27:31] So if they have to bump one and it's not necessary to include in the show and they can
[00:27:36] do something live instead, then that's probably what he'll do every time.
[00:27:39] This wasn't one of the best ones I've ever seen.
[00:27:41] It was, the song was catchy enough and the, and the, well, so the, the song is catchy as
[00:27:44] hell.
[00:27:45] Yeah.
[00:27:45] The song's very good.
[00:27:46] Yeah.
[00:27:46] It, I think it takes a little too long to get to the reveal and the reveal itself is
[00:27:51] not necessarily hilarious enough to warrant that long of a wait.
[00:27:55] I think that's its biggest problem.
[00:27:56] Are they working on a new album?
[00:27:57] They must be.
[00:27:58] They have mentioned on the lands of my podcast that they've been working on some stuff for
[00:28:01] a while and they're not necessarily sure if they have a full album yet or like what
[00:28:05] they want to do, but they, they said, they have said that they have some stuff.
[00:28:08] So.
[00:28:09] And then, uh, I would like to shout out like the props people and the set design here
[00:28:15] is fantastic.
[00:28:16] Yeah.
[00:28:16] The phone wall and all that was nuts.
[00:28:19] The quality both in the videos now and I, even in the song, cause between this and sushi
[00:28:26] glory hole, you can tell there's a real uptick in the production quality behind the music.
[00:28:30] Do you think the only not the lonely island is just doing these on their own and saying,
[00:28:34] Hey, we have this thing.
[00:28:35] You can put it in.
[00:28:36] No.
[00:28:36] Do you think that's an L team still involved?
[00:28:38] I'm sure.
[00:28:39] Yeah.
[00:28:39] I'm sure that's not cause cause ever they've, they've talked about how when they first started
[00:28:43] doing a small little shorts, they were doing so much gorilla stuff themselves and
[00:28:47] they didn't even have a proper video unit.
[00:28:48] Now SNL has a full on video unit just for stuff like SNL digital shorts.
[00:28:53] So they definitely have the team to pull this stuff off.
[00:28:56] And then, I mean, it's called what it is.
[00:28:57] The, the lonely island boys are, are men.
[00:28:59] Yeah.
[00:28:59] They are now fully established people that have done this for years.
[00:29:02] That's what I'm saying.
[00:29:03] They could get their own team there easily.
[00:29:05] But they're, they're taking what is being given to them and operating it at a very high
[00:29:09] level, even higher than when they were on the show, of course.
[00:29:11] And one of, is it Akiva?
[00:29:13] Is he in Norway right now or something?
[00:29:15] No, Jorma's in Finland shooting, shooting a movie.
[00:29:18] Yeah.
[00:29:18] So this wasn't done by all three of them then.
[00:29:21] Probably not.
[00:29:22] But Kiv was, Kiv was in the sketch briefly.
[00:29:25] In the sketch, yeah.
[00:29:25] So he was probably involved.
[00:29:27] No, not, not, not an all timer, but the song itself very, very well done.
[00:29:31] The production value very, very well done.
[00:29:32] A great rare appearance by Colin Jost in a sketch.
[00:29:35] Yes.
[00:29:35] Used in the perfect way possible.
[00:29:37] I agree.
[00:29:37] I agree.
[00:29:38] Uh, and he was great last week in the cold open as well.
[00:29:42] Yeah.
[00:29:43] Uh, good to see him in a couple of sketches.
[00:29:44] I think you used perfect.
[00:29:45] We need a white guy scapegoat.
[00:29:47] Yes.
[00:29:47] Call Colin Jost.
[00:29:48] Yes.
[00:29:48] All right.
[00:29:49] Moving on.
[00:29:50] One that I actually really liked for some reason.
[00:29:54] Banger boys.
[00:29:55] Um, Andrew Schmuck's Marcelo Hernandez and Emil Walken play podcast hosts who discuss interviewing
[00:30:02] Trump before the election with their producer, Charlie XCX.
[00:30:06] Ben, I feel like this one hit home for you.
[00:30:08] Yeah.
[00:30:09] The thing that I liked the most about this was it took a premise, which I was, I was thinking
[00:30:14] this is a funny premise, but they escalated it to the point where he was like, I don't,
[00:30:19] I don't think I want to be the ambassador.
[00:30:20] Like it wasn't just these bro guys.
[00:30:22] Yeah, we're going to rule the world.
[00:30:23] But it was like, well, no, dude, I don't want to do that.
[00:30:25] Like, that's great.
[00:30:27] That's very self-referential and it's not fourth wall necessarily, but it's, it's, it's
[00:30:31] and it's not even, it's not a hat on a hat or anything crazy like that.
[00:30:33] It's just good escalation to like change the temperature of the, of the sketch and make
[00:30:38] it something different when you had a good thing.
[00:30:40] And now I think it was great because of that.
[00:30:41] And for, for our listeners that might not follow politics as much, this kind of plays
[00:30:45] on this idea that, you know, cultural critics have been talking about the, the, the media
[00:30:51] has changed, right?
[00:30:53] He was just on our podcast four days ago or whatever it was.
[00:30:55] Why go on the nightly news or why get interviewed by Anderson Cooper, where it's viewed by 1
[00:31:01] million people when you can go on Joe Rogan and get viewed by 50, 15 to 40 million people.
[00:31:09] Um, you know, it's cooler than a million assholes, a billion assholes.
[00:31:13] And so like the idea and, and these, these bros, and I'm not even compared to some of these
[00:31:20] podcasts, Joe Rogan is a fricking professional, right?
[00:31:22] Yeah.
[00:31:22] I'm not even kidding.
[00:31:23] Like to some of these people that like have millions and millions of listeners, like he
[00:31:29] is a professional compared to the, and he went on a bunch, Trump went on a bunch of these
[00:31:33] different podcasts, apparently influenced by his son, Barron, which makes sense.
[00:31:37] Right.
[00:31:38] Cause Barron and like 18 years old, he's going to know what like all of the 18, 19 year olds
[00:31:44] are listening to.
[00:31:45] And this is a, a perfect encapsulation of that type of podcast.
[00:31:50] So I liked the critique of it.
[00:31:52] I don't know if everyone would get it, but I thought it was pretty fun.
[00:31:55] Yeah.
[00:31:55] I think it went on a little too long.
[00:31:57] I agree.
[00:31:57] That would be my critique.
[00:31:58] Yeah.
[00:31:59] They probably could have cut like a small portion of it out.
[00:32:01] Um, I did like dis mucs being the voice of reason with the, with Marcelo Hernandez is,
[00:32:06] you know, more idiot bro.
[00:32:07] Yeah.
[00:32:08] Idiot bro.
[00:32:08] Yeah.
[00:32:09] No man.
[00:32:10] And there's always the woman producer too.
[00:32:12] There's always the woman producer and that's on morning shows as well.
[00:32:15] If you've ever known.
[00:32:15] And that was a fun runner too.
[00:32:16] Just the different sponsors and everything.
[00:32:18] Yeah.
[00:32:18] I like that.
[00:32:19] I like the sponsors.
[00:32:20] They had a lot of fun with this one.
[00:32:21] Yeah.
[00:32:21] All right.
[00:32:23] It's time for weekend update with Colin Jost and Michael Che.
[00:32:26] I'm going to do all of our, our bits as well.
[00:32:28] And we'll, we'll just dissect it all.
[00:32:30] Uh, while we talk about this or while I read this, Brad's going to put his
[00:32:33] predometer in his cell phone so that we know it's an honest answer, but let me read it
[00:32:37] for you for our, our listeners.
[00:32:39] We can update anchors.
[00:32:41] Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the week's biggest news.
[00:32:44] This includes topics such as Donald Trump nominating Matt gets gates for attorney general
[00:32:49] plan B sales rising after Trump won the presidential election.
[00:32:53] And Joe Biden welcoming Trump to the white house wicked doll boxes accidentally linking
[00:32:59] to a porn site, which is hilarious.
[00:33:01] A spirit airlines flight being struck by gunfire at Disney goers complaining that a ride makes
[00:33:08] them too wet guests included tiger King Joe exotic played by Bowen Yang who stopped by
[00:33:15] the weekend update desk to discuss writing a letter to Donald Trump asking for a pardon and
[00:33:19] a position in his cabinet.
[00:33:21] Additionally, peanut, the squirrel's widow played by Sarah Sherman arrived to discuss her late
[00:33:26] husband's death.
[00:33:28] Now each week we do this thing called the predometer, which gauges, um, how much chemistry
[00:33:35] that the hosts had.
[00:33:37] It also kind of includes a little bit of the comedy and a little just what Brad's feeling
[00:33:42] like there's no science to this has been.
[00:33:44] And I have discovered there is no, there's no science.
[00:33:47] Well, there's no like dialed in line in is a doubt.
[00:33:51] It's one to 100.
[00:33:52] We get to guess where this is at.
[00:33:55] Let's say it.
[00:33:56] We have not done well.
[00:33:56] Let's look like one, two, three and say your number.
[00:33:59] So we're not like, okay.
[00:34:00] No, I like to do one less than you.
[00:34:02] Right.
[00:34:02] I know.
[00:34:03] So that one is the same time.
[00:34:04] Like, so the one, two, three, and you must say the number.
[00:34:06] Okay.
[00:34:07] You're not going to say the number.
[00:34:08] I can just see it.
[00:34:09] Freaking face.
[00:34:10] One, two, three, 70.
[00:34:13] 85.
[00:34:14] You just used to delay it anyway.
[00:34:16] I, I, I, I, I, one, two, three.
[00:34:19] I was going to look at you and then say 85.
[00:34:21] Anyway, I said 78.
[00:34:22] 83.
[00:34:24] I went over, but I was closer.
[00:34:26] You were closer.
[00:34:28] 83.
[00:34:29] What?
[00:34:29] So unpack it.
[00:34:30] What was the, that wasn't great.
[00:34:32] It was actually one of the lower of the season, but not the lowest of the season.
[00:34:36] No, not the, not the, not the, not the, not the, nothing's going to be 119 from last
[00:34:39] week.
[00:34:39] Right.
[00:34:40] 135 in the week before that.
[00:34:41] Come on.
[00:34:43] So what, what, what in there did you like in their chemistry?
[00:34:48] It was just a general sense of playfulness.
[00:34:52] This.
[00:34:52] Oh, fuck off.
[00:34:53] Cause I didn't think, I didn't think it was an 85.
[00:34:55] I thought he was going to.
[00:34:56] I just don't love.
[00:34:57] First of all, first of all, I don't even like the way he's looking right now.
[00:35:01] I don't even like the way you said that knowing what you knew what you were doing when
[00:35:04] you said this.
[00:35:05] Yeah.
[00:35:05] I'm going to piss Ben off so much.
[00:35:07] And I'm just going to say general playfulness.
[00:35:09] Playfulness.
[00:35:09] And he looked at me like, say something and I'm going to say something.
[00:35:12] Fuck you.
[00:35:13] Uh, yeah.
[00:35:14] Sorry.
[00:35:14] Sorry.
[00:35:15] Listener.
[00:35:15] Um, like, let me be clear.
[00:35:17] I don't even think I'm really doing this legitimately anymore.
[00:35:22] I think I think I'm just giving a number and let's just see how the fight happens.
[00:35:27] Yeah.
[00:35:27] See, that's it is.
[00:35:28] You light a match and you let it on fire.
[00:35:30] I will say this, the jokes in this weekend update were better than they have been.
[00:35:36] That's why I gave a little higher.
[00:35:37] They were so much sharper.
[00:35:38] The writers were great.
[00:35:39] And they're, they're going after the, the political appointees and things like that.
[00:35:44] You know, this, the, the best joke of the year was on weekend update.
[00:35:47] What was it?
[00:35:49] Uh, Matt Gates, who looks like Frankenstein raped Dracula.
[00:35:52] Yes.
[00:35:53] That was.
[00:35:53] That's the best joke of the year.
[00:35:54] Oh, so that combined, uh, I forgot to mention earlier, but in the cold open when he says,
[00:36:00] uh, Elon Musk, uh, Matt Gates, alien versus predator.
[00:36:04] Yes.
[00:36:04] That's a great joke.
[00:36:05] Yeah.
[00:36:05] These are great jokes.
[00:36:06] Yeah.
[00:36:06] This is why I tune into SNL.
[00:36:08] Like that's, it's a, it's almost a perfect joke.
[00:36:10] It is.
[00:36:11] The sad truth of the Trump era is the comedy will probably be better.
[00:36:14] You look up at that picture and you hear the words Frankenstein raped Dracula and you're
[00:36:20] like, yes, I agree completely.
[00:36:23] Yeah.
[00:36:24] I can't believe nobody's ever said this before.
[00:36:26] This is hilarious.
[00:36:27] I hope someone on staff got $20,000 just for that joke.
[00:36:30] That's a perfect joke.
[00:36:31] Um, that being said, the other stuff was really good too.
[00:36:34] Uh, like the spirit, spirit airlines going to Haiti.
[00:36:38] Yeah.
[00:36:39] Like what was the joke though?
[00:36:40] It was like an unusual bump in the road for those of you flying spirit to Haiti.
[00:36:45] That's such a terrible.
[00:36:47] I have flown into the, the Port-au-Prince airport probably six times, six or seven times
[00:36:53] going there.
[00:36:53] My dad used to own a house in Haiti and we would go in there.
[00:36:57] And the first time I flew in, it was in the late nineties.
[00:37:01] And the UN was still there and you'd fly into the airport.
[00:37:06] And for some reason to give you the like feeling of comfort, they had a, a large airplane that
[00:37:12] had crashed far from the runway.
[00:37:15] Um, but you fly in there and then you get off the airplane and it's one of those airports.
[00:37:19] I don't know if you've ever flown in an airport where you have to get off the plane and then
[00:37:22] walk on the runway.
[00:37:24] Yeah.
[00:37:25] Um, and you get off on the plane, you walk over and you just see dozens of UN soldiers
[00:37:30] with machine guns on the air.
[00:37:32] It's just, it's quite a treat.
[00:37:34] Uh, now they stopped the UN left and let the country burn down.
[00:37:38] But, um, it's quite a treat if you can ever go to Haiti.
[00:37:41] Uh, I'm good.
[00:37:42] I think I'm good actually.
[00:37:43] I don't need to be shot out on a plane.
[00:37:44] You ever want a vacation in Haiti?
[00:37:45] No, I think I'm going to wait.
[00:37:47] I think.
[00:37:47] Oh boy.
[00:37:48] Let's talk a little bit about tiger King, uh, played by Bowen Yang, Joe exotic.
[00:37:54] What did you think of his, uh, Joe exotic impression?
[00:37:57] It would have been fine.
[00:37:59] And now, but I was, I was so playfully, uh, happy with the tiger paw coming in.
[00:38:05] It saved it for me.
[00:38:06] Cause I was like, this is fine, I guess.
[00:38:07] And then when that happened, it's because it's the way Bowen Yang does it though.
[00:38:10] Yeah.
[00:38:11] Because, Hey, and he knows it's so fit and it's just playing up in it.
[00:38:14] And I just, he's talking directly to somebody who understands that kind of comedy.
[00:38:18] Well, I also love how comically big.
[00:38:20] It's just so stupid, right?
[00:38:22] It's just so stupid.
[00:38:23] It did need saved a little bit because I'm already getting tired of the idiot thinks
[00:38:28] he's going to get appointed to the Trump cabinet thing.
[00:38:30] Right.
[00:38:30] Because that joke now is being made constantly.
[00:38:33] The paw saved the whole thing.
[00:38:34] But yeah, the paw, the physical paw there was good.
[00:38:36] What about, uh, peanut, the squirrels, a widow?
[00:38:39] Did you guys even familiar?
[00:38:40] This is very Twitter by the way.
[00:38:42] I knew the story, uh, and it was sad, but at the same time, don't have a squirrel in your
[00:38:46] apartment and then post that you've got a squirrel in your apartment.
[00:38:48] Maybe just keep it yourself.
[00:38:50] Um, I think you're supposed to, you're not supposed to, it's illegal.
[00:38:52] So you should be able to have a squirrel.
[00:38:54] It depends on where you get the squirrel.
[00:38:55] Right?
[00:38:55] No.
[00:38:56] You're not allowed to have those kind of animals in New York.
[00:38:58] I don't know.
[00:38:58] I don't find that.
[00:38:59] Because they have rabies and they spread their raccoons.
[00:39:00] Well, they can have rabies.
[00:39:01] They don't automatically have rabies.
[00:39:02] Did he have a raccoon?
[00:39:04] I don't know.
[00:39:04] But at the end of the day, this sketch was very funny because as always, Sarah Sherman
[00:39:09] finds a way to make it about shitting on Colin Joseph.
[00:39:11] Well, yeah.
[00:39:12] I mean, cause the last time they did this was she was Flacco, the owl.
[00:39:15] Uh, Flacco's widow.
[00:39:17] Yeah.
[00:39:17] And so if they can keep finding animals who have passed away and have her.
[00:39:20] And the costuming is insane.
[00:39:23] The tail.
[00:39:23] The tail in and of itself.
[00:39:24] It was so good.
[00:39:25] It had puppeteers behind it.
[00:39:26] Yeah.
[00:39:26] It was fantastic.
[00:39:27] But yeah, that, that was very good.
[00:39:29] And like, you call me Hazel, Hazelnut.
[00:39:31] Come on, man.
[00:39:32] It was good stuff.
[00:39:33] All right.
[00:39:33] Moving on.
[00:39:34] Acting teacher, a commercial acting teacher played by Charlie XCX and Marcel Hernandez
[00:39:39] gives unconventional acting tips to students that Andrew DeSmuches, Chloe Feynman,
[00:39:43] Devin Walker, Ashley Padilla and Jane Wickline in his class.
[00:39:47] Brad, what did you think of this one?
[00:39:50] So for me, initially I was, I felt like I was very underwhelmed by it.
[00:39:55] But then once Marcelo started yelling actual commercial slogans in that very dramatic way, then I was like, okay, there's the sketch.
[00:40:03] He does have that ability now to save sketches too, which is, you know, he was wonderful.
[00:40:08] And the, the whole like, and that's, that's how she almost booked it.
[00:40:12] Like that's the whole thing.
[00:40:14] It's like, but they didn't book it.
[00:40:15] Have it your way.
[00:40:19] And I will say, uh, this is a sketch that could have gone bad because the host could have really screwed up.
[00:40:25] Yep.
[00:40:25] But she was spot on.
[00:40:27] Yeah.
[00:40:27] Really didn't flub too much.
[00:40:29] You know, he's saying do the emphasis on this word, this word, and she does it and it works.
[00:40:33] Kudos to her.
[00:40:34] And that's hard to do.
[00:40:35] I don't think she screwed up any sketches.
[00:40:36] No, no.
[00:40:36] She was great.
[00:40:37] The whole night she was great.
[00:40:38] And the, uh, the random escalation at the end to wait, you guys are married.
[00:40:42] Yeah.
[00:40:43] It's so random.
[00:40:44] No, I really liked that sketch.
[00:40:46] Yeah.
[00:40:47] It turned out to be pretty good, even though it took just a little while to get chugging along.
[00:40:51] Agreed.
[00:40:52] All right.
[00:40:52] It girl Thanksgiving special.
[00:40:53] Thanksgiving special adds a chic twist to the traditional holiday by featuring celebrities
[00:40:59] such as Victoria Beckham played by Charlie XCX, Naomi Campbell played by Edgar Wodum,
[00:41:05] Rachel Sennett played by Sarah Sherman and others, including Ashley Padilla, Jane Wickline and Heidi Gardner.
[00:41:10] Bo and Yang and Chloe Feynman play the host, Mark Jacobs and Julia Fox while Keenan Thompson portrays Law Roach.
[00:41:18] This is another sketch where they get to do their impressions, right?
[00:41:21] Um, I didn't get it.
[00:41:23] I didn't love this.
[00:41:24] I didn't love it, but I did.
[00:41:25] I did get it.
[00:41:26] And I appreciate it because it's, it's, it's, it's not for us.
[00:41:30] So, no, no, it's, it's like, it's, it's for a different, it's for a different pop culture sect.
[00:41:37] I think the impressions were solid.
[00:41:39] I liked the physical gag of them walking on a Thanksgiving dinner table and kicking the stuff around.
[00:41:44] Cause I'm like, that's not funny.
[00:41:45] It was, I think it was amusing.
[00:41:47] I don't think it was laugh out loud funny, but it was, it was amusing enough.
[00:41:49] This reminded me very much of like the Charlie XCX talk show, which was just not funny.
[00:41:54] So to me, this was a little more weird than funny.
[00:41:57] And I almost wish it would have played earlier in the show and it might've felt like it was better because putting it later in the show just made it feel weird.
[00:42:06] I don't know if that makes sense.
[00:42:07] Um, I do want to give a special shout out to Shera Sherman though, because her, uh, pouting face as Rachel Senate is exactly what Rachel Senate does is certain like photos and stuff like that.
[00:42:20] And Rachel Senate herself even posted on her Instagram that, that Sarah nailed the pout.
[00:42:25] That's awesome.
[00:42:25] But also bringing Rachel Senate in there where only seven people know who that is.
[00:42:30] That's a very, she's a very niche.
[00:42:32] She's actually very popular among the youths.
[00:42:34] Is that right?
[00:42:35] Yeah.
[00:42:35] So I think anybody who knows who Charlie XCX is probably knows who Rachel Senate is.
[00:42:39] Okay.
[00:42:39] And so who is Rachel Senate?
[00:42:40] She's Rosie Schuster in the Saturday Night Live movie.
[00:42:43] She's very good.
[00:42:44] Oh, okay.
[00:42:44] She's very good.
[00:42:45] Gotcha.
[00:42:45] We talked about that.
[00:42:46] We had a whole episode dedicated to it.
[00:42:47] Yeah, but I forget names.
[00:42:47] I mentioned her name and I met her and I interviewed her.
[00:42:50] She's very nice.
[00:42:51] That's great.
[00:42:52] She's also a hot little potato.
[00:42:53] Okay.
[00:42:53] Easy.
[00:42:54] Easy.
[00:42:55] All right.
[00:42:56] Shrek the musical.
[00:42:57] Shirk the musical?
[00:42:58] Shirk the musical?
[00:43:00] Shrek.
[00:43:01] I accidentally wrote Shirk.
[00:43:03] Tensions arise among a group of friends played by Bowen Yang, Sarah Sherman, Ego Odom, and Emile
[00:43:09] Walken, when one of them, Charlie XCX, begins a romantic relationship with a member played
[00:43:15] by Michael Longfellow of the cast of Shrek the musical.
[00:43:19] Ego Odom reached her milestone 400th sketch on SNL during this one.
[00:43:26] So Bowen Yang for this.
[00:43:31] He didn't even remember his own character's name.
[00:43:34] It was just so good.
[00:43:35] I'm Gadget.
[00:43:37] The fact that he was so sassy and pissed.
[00:43:40] Oh, man.
[00:43:41] It was needless, but I love it.
[00:43:43] No, it was needed because it was hilarious.
[00:43:46] Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
[00:43:46] Especially when he flew off the handle on the most innocuous stuff.
[00:43:50] Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
[00:43:50] It was so good.
[00:43:51] But it wasn't like, it wasn't like, it was just Bowen Yang, hey Bowen, do something funny.
[00:43:58] It felt like, and he did.
[00:43:59] This was, it felt like a true 10 to 1.
[00:44:02] Yeah.
[00:44:03] Now, let me ask you a question.
[00:44:04] What do you think that they did to get the green paint on their mouths and hands?
[00:44:09] They were kissing and fondling.
[00:44:11] Where?
[00:44:12] No, that's the point of the sketch is they...
[00:44:15] I do like that when, so who walked backstage and then came back out with the fresh paint?
[00:44:23] Sarah Sherman.
[00:44:23] So like, you could just see this.
[00:44:25] It was wet and they just smeared it on it.
[00:44:26] They slathered it on it.
[00:44:27] And so my brain's going, oh, that must have been hilarious.
[00:44:30] I'm her back.
[00:44:31] They're like, no, you gotta dry it a little bit.
[00:44:33] I don't have time.
[00:44:33] I gotta get back out there.
[00:44:34] Because it looks so fresh.
[00:44:36] Yeah.
[00:44:36] And so clumpy.
[00:44:37] There wasn't, I'll say this, there wasn't a ton of escalation in this for me.
[00:44:42] I didn't need it.
[00:44:43] But I did.
[00:44:44] That's what I was gonna say.
[00:44:44] I didn't need it.
[00:44:46] I knew where it was going and I was okay with it.
[00:44:48] The escalation came from the reveals of further paint because I love the way they reveal the
[00:44:53] Bow and Yang.
[00:44:54] The bow and Yang, the prince and the face and the ass.
[00:44:57] The face.
[00:44:58] The face.
[00:44:58] Motorboating the ass.
[00:45:00] And then finally he picks Emil Wacom, right?
[00:45:04] Yeah.
[00:45:04] Just like Pablo.
[00:45:06] Yeah.
[00:45:06] We just pick you.
[00:45:07] Okay.
[00:45:08] It was just such a weird.
[00:45:09] And also I feel like making Michael Longfellow Shrek was such a weird choice too.
[00:45:13] It's like a sad Santa Claus version of Shrek.
[00:45:16] I didn't even know who it was.
[00:45:17] Yeah, kids, whatever.
[00:45:18] I didn't even know who it was.
[00:45:19] No, it did take me a second to figure out who it was.
[00:45:21] It was so great.
[00:45:22] That was so fun.
[00:45:22] All right.
[00:45:23] That's the episode.
[00:45:23] Let's do two cut for time sketches.
[00:45:25] This is a rarity.
[00:45:26] This is not common where there are two cut for time sketches.
[00:45:30] Most episodes don't even have any.
[00:45:31] It's also, I'd like to point out a rarity that a sketch that they tease in the opening
[00:45:36] credits is cut from the episode.
[00:45:38] One of these sketches went a little too long.
[00:45:39] I put out a thing on Twitter and Blue Sky asking if this was something that had ever
[00:45:44] happened in SNL history before.
[00:45:47] And somebody who is like, I'm just somebody who pays attention to this kind of stuff a
[00:45:51] lot.
[00:45:51] Apparently it happened during the Jacob Elordi episode where there was, I don't know if
[00:45:57] it was Please Don't Destroy.
[00:45:57] I imagine it probably had to be.
[00:45:58] And it didn't air on the show.
[00:46:00] And then the last time that they had mentioned was like a long time before that involving
[00:46:05] something with Robert Smigel.
[00:46:06] Gotcha.
[00:46:06] So it does not happen often where they announce something in the opening credits and it doesn't
[00:46:11] make it into the show.
[00:46:12] The Please Don't Destroy one was great.
[00:46:14] And I wish it could have been on the show.
[00:46:16] It was actually cut for time for real.
[00:46:18] Yeah.
[00:46:19] If it was on the show, it would have been funny.
[00:46:21] I will say it is, it feels like an evolution, a variation on what they did with Dakota Johnson
[00:46:27] when they roasted each other.
[00:46:28] Which is fine.
[00:46:29] So good.
[00:46:29] But the back and forth I think made it more fun and the setup of where they were and just changing
[00:46:34] that up and making it like a meet cute was funny.
[00:46:37] And the acknowledgement.
[00:46:38] Oh, you haven't been here in seven episodes.
[00:46:40] Yeah.
[00:46:40] Yeah.
[00:46:41] That was great.
[00:46:41] That was a funny.
[00:46:43] A lot of great one line.
[00:46:44] The only thing that would have made it better is that they've had more SNL digital shorts
[00:46:48] this year than Please Don't Destroy videos.
[00:46:50] Yes.
[00:46:51] All right.
[00:46:52] Caden in this cover time pass.
[00:46:54] Yeah.
[00:46:54] A couple of other stories about.
[00:46:56] Now hold on a second.
[00:46:58] Caden's a special boy.
[00:46:59] Yeah.
[00:46:59] No, this is real bad.
[00:47:00] Okay.
[00:47:00] So I thought this was funny until they brought Caden down and like, oh, he really is the
[00:47:04] person that they said he was.
[00:47:05] It went on way too long.
[00:47:06] There were some funny things about parents that are insecure about their son or daughter
[00:47:11] not being a performer.
[00:47:12] There's one note that went nowhere.
[00:47:14] It went on too long.
[00:47:15] And it went too long.
[00:47:16] And it just wasn't.
[00:47:16] Jokes weren't that funny.
[00:47:17] And also they forgot, the other parents forgot their kids were still playing upstairs.
[00:47:22] Yeah.
[00:47:22] They forgot their kids.
[00:47:23] They left.
[00:47:24] You get a little wine thrown on you and you just walk out the front door.
[00:47:26] Yeah.
[00:47:26] We're done with the sketches.
[00:47:27] What they said.
[00:47:28] No, you can see why they cut this one.
[00:47:30] Yes.
[00:47:31] All right.
[00:47:32] Let's go to the two, two things we do at the end of the episode where we pick the sketch
[00:47:37] of the night and the performer of the night, the MVP.
[00:47:40] So let's start with the, let's do this.
[00:47:42] We usually do sketch of the night.
[00:47:43] Let's do MVP.
[00:47:44] It's Marcelo Hernandez hands down.
[00:47:46] Yeah.
[00:47:46] I think it's Marcelo Hernandez.
[00:47:48] He was, he crushed it.
[00:47:50] Everything.
[00:47:50] He is a big timer.
[00:47:52] He's, he's one of my favorites now.
[00:47:54] He's a big boy.
[00:47:54] What was your favorite sketch, Mr. Brad?
[00:47:57] I think my favorite sketch now that you bring it up because I wasn't thinking about
[00:48:02] it before.
[00:48:03] Oh boy.
[00:48:04] Do you do this?
[00:48:05] Do you not do this in your, your, your.
[00:48:06] He doesn't do a review anymore.
[00:48:07] Yeah.
[00:48:08] So here's a little bit of an announcement that is the first thing.
[00:48:11] There will no longer be written reviews on slash film.
[00:48:14] Uh, instead they're going to show our podcast there.
[00:48:17] Yeah.
[00:48:17] Uh, they're just not, they're just not getting the traffic that they would like to see for the
[00:48:21] time it takes to do them, which I get and it's fine.
[00:48:23] I have this as an outlet, so I don't care.
[00:48:26] Um, but no, so I, I did not do a written review for the Charlie XCX episode.
[00:48:30] So I, otherwise I would have this locked and loaded and picked.
[00:48:33] Um, I think that my favorite sketch is probably whatever you pick.
[00:48:39] Name it up.
[00:48:40] Uh, I was actually going to pick what you guys picked.
[00:48:43] Oh my God.
[00:48:43] You really done everything?
[00:48:44] I, you know what I'm going to go with, I'm going to go with because here's, here's,
[00:48:49] Oh my God.
[00:48:50] I am done.
[00:48:51] Do you really have a clear one?
[00:48:53] Uh, yeah.
[00:48:53] I don't know.
[00:48:54] If you know, then say it, Ben.
[00:48:55] What the fuck?
[00:48:56] Maybe we'll agree with you.
[00:48:57] I don't know if there is a standout sketch here.
[00:48:59] I think it was a good episode.
[00:49:01] I really do.
[00:49:01] Pick one.
[00:49:02] Hurry.
[00:49:02] But I don't think there was a great sketch in this.
[00:49:04] No, Ben, you know so much.
[00:49:05] It's not a great sketch, but the Shrek one was my favorite.
[00:49:10] Really?
[00:49:10] The Shrek one was your favorite?
[00:49:12] See, that's what I'm saying.
[00:49:13] That was a fine sketch.
[00:49:14] That's fucked up, man.
[00:49:14] Cause it was fine.
[00:49:15] I would have picked probably the digital short that the please don't destroy, not the please
[00:49:20] don't destroy, the, um, lonely island one because it's produced really well and it's
[00:49:24] a good song.
[00:49:25] But even that I feel a little bit, this was a, this was a, uh, not, there was not a peak
[00:49:30] and really not a valley here.
[00:49:31] It's too bad because I, there was, there was just a pretty good episode.
[00:49:34] And so that's why like the, the Shrek one reminded me of a true 10 to one sketch.
[00:49:38] I didn't, I didn't see it coming, uh, necessarily the stuff.
[00:49:42] I'll pick baby moon because again, it was a, it was a better version of the first one
[00:49:46] they did.
[00:49:47] Fair enough.
[00:49:47] And I thought it was pretty funny.
[00:49:48] I'm going with the digital short.
[00:49:49] All right.
[00:49:50] Okay.
[00:49:50] That's where my flavor is.
[00:49:52] Do you agree though, Brad, that it wasn't this, it was a good episode, but there wasn't
[00:49:57] a standout sketch.
[00:49:58] Yeah.
[00:49:58] It felt like a pretty just average episode all the way through.
[00:50:02] I think better than average.
[00:50:02] There were, I think that the sketches within the sketches, there were some really good
[00:50:06] jokes, but none of the sketches themselves felt like they were great.
[00:50:10] It was very, very solid, very solid overall.
[00:50:12] Yeah.
[00:50:12] Just a solid episode.
[00:50:13] I was impressed by Charlie XCX as a host.
[00:50:15] I wouldn't mind seeing her come back again.
[00:50:17] She was, she was very fun to watch, obviously game for anything.
[00:50:20] And yeah, it was, it was very enjoyable.
[00:50:22] All right.
[00:50:22] What is our next episode?
[00:50:23] Our next episode will be after December 7th when Paul Mescal, the star of Gladiator 2 hosts
[00:50:29] host SNL and I'd just like to say, called it.
[00:50:33] You did call it.
[00:50:34] It was good.
[00:50:35] All right.
[00:50:36] That's our episode for the day.
[00:50:37] Oh, Shaboozy's the musical guest.
[00:50:39] Yeah.
[00:50:39] I don't know who that is.
[00:50:40] He sings the song about Jack James.
[00:50:44] Shaboozy.
[00:50:45] It's like a country song, but he's not white.
[00:50:48] I got myself a whiskey.
[00:50:50] Take it to the bar.
[00:50:52] Yep.
[00:50:52] There you go.
[00:50:52] Give myself some handker nights.
[00:50:55] You can follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
[00:50:58] Help us out by commenting and being involved in the conversation online.
[00:51:02] If you will share the episodes, let's, let's, let's get the kind of conversation going.
[00:51:07] We appreciate you as listeners.
[00:51:08] We'll be back here in a couple of weeks.
[00:51:10] Thanks so much.
[00:51:11] Be good to yourself.
[00:51:12] Be good to others.
[00:51:13] Bye-bye.
[00:51:13] Bye-bye.
