[00:00:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Casey Kasem. No, well so when Frank Caliendo's comedy singer presents where he does a whole bunch of impressions obviously cuz that's what he does

[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_01]: His go on his his Casey Kasem bit is funny too because he talks about how cuz casey Casey Kasem was also

[00:00:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Robin in the old Batman Robin anime series that look Batman. It's a letter from the Riddler and

[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_03]: And he writes dear Batman Robin

[00:01:08] [SPEAKER_01]: So this is the ten to one podcast the Saturday Night Live podcast as we started doing on the last episode

[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_01]: We're going through every single

[00:01:18] [SPEAKER_01]: SNL digital short there are over a hundred of them and

[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_01]: We're watching every single one. We've broken it up into three different chunks

[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_01]: We already talked about the first chunk on the previous episode and this one is going to be the second part of that podcast

[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Trilogy where we have watched the next 35

[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_01]: digital shorts

[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_01]: But before we get to that we did want to take a little bit of a I guess maybe a go-flicks yourself

[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Tangent if you will in a way

[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_01]: But this is very relevant to our interest because while we were away the first trailer for Saturday Night debuted

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Which is the movie written by Jason Reitman and Gil Keenan and directed by Jason Reitman

[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_01]: son of Ivan Reitman who grew up around a lot of the original Saturday Night Live cast members including Bill Murray and Dan

[00:02:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Akroyd and

[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_01]: this is a movie about the

[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Premiere of the first episode of what was then called Saturday night back in October of 1975

[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_01]: This is a movie that will take place in the time leading up to the show's premiere will chronicle all the chaos from behind

[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_01]: The scenes it has Gabriel LaBelle who was the proxy for Steven Spielberg in the movie the fable men's playing Lorne Michaels

[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_01]: And a huge ensemble playing the not ready for primetime players some of the key executives behind the scenes

[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Some of the famous faces who were there on the first episode including George Carlin

[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Jim Henson Andy Kaufman and whatnot and

[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_01]: So the first trailer debuted each one to talk about it real quick so first trailer for Saturday night

[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_01]: What did you guys think about this trailer? I can't wait as

[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_00]: fans of the current show

[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_00]: but also his

[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_00]: lovers of the history of SNL this hits a sweet spot for us right and

[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_00]: as

[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Lovers of film. I love the tone that this film is already taking

[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_00]: I love the cast that they've already assembled. I mean, it's just it's gonna be great

[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_00]: I I I just genuinely believe this film is gonna be fantastic. I hope it is

[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I just I just believe it but um it also is coming at the 50th year anniversary, right? So it's another kind of

[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Another brick to that wall that they're building for

[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_00]: The 50 year anniversary stuff. I'm just excited over the next year all of the specials

[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_00]: All the conversations that are had this film

[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_00]: And it debuts on October 11th, which is the same day on which Saturday Night Live

[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_00]: debuted in 1975

[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_00]: So just a lot of fun like just a kind of some fun to stop there

[00:03:56] [SPEAKER_06]: Who is the most famous actor or actress that's in this?

[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Probably well most well the J.K. Simmons. J.K. Simmons or Willem Dafoe

[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And and who do they play so J.K. Simmons is playing Milton Berle

[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, and that's actually a that's something that they've conflated that didn't happen on the premiere

[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_01]: But it's something that like it's a famous behind-the-scenes story that they're gonna put in your movie and you're gonna see that

[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_06]: There's gonna be quite a few things that they're gonna put in there like that

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm sure and Willem Dafoe actually plays and this is executive David Tebbit. So that's I love that right because

[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_06]: You don't have a very very famous a-lister playing Chevy Chase or playing Bill Murray or playing Dan Aykroyd

[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, Bill Murray wasn't around for the free. You know what I mean?

[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_06]: You don't have famous people playing you have great actors, but they're not exact

[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, you know, I don't I don't necessarily need to see

[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_06]: You know Bobby Moynihan as John Belushi in this

[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_06]: I want to see I want to see the characters represented and not have it take me out

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_06]: And that's why I loved about this trailer. It just felt like I'm watching

[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_06]: like, uh, you know, you watch those documentaries that have

[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_06]: Filmed portions of it and this is kind of what that looks like to me

[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Even though obviously there's a lot of narrating our narrative structure here

[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I do love that. That's how they're approaching it of like this is these are this is a

[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Recreation of what really happened? Yeah, you've got what people like Finn Wolfhard Nicholas Braun

[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, so Finn was still hard as pretty no hearts playing an NBC page

[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_01]: He's the one who's trying to sell tickets outside of well, you know stranger things have happened

[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_01]: but no, I I think that I

[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Agree with that because I like the vibe of this trailer to like it creates that that

[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Very urgent ticking clock of like the shows coming with you like or not. There's actual ticking

[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_01]: It's intense like they can use the camera

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_01]: You can tell it's just gonna be roaming around and like it like as if you were just like a fly on the wall

[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_01]: And stuff was happening

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_06]: It's just a smart choice to have such an ensemble

[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_06]: movie about an ensemble cast and they were the not ready for primetime players and a lot of these people are

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_06]: Brand new or people that I just don't know. It's it's a mix

[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_01]: There are some people who are pretty

[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Lesser known there's there's a couple people who are a little more famous. I really like Dylan O'Brien

[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I think yeah, Dylan O'Brien is playing Dan accurate seen him in some things. He's from the Maze Runner. Oh sure

[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, um, is he the actor that broke his back? He's the yes

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he was in a film. Do you remember from 20? I like those movies love and monsters. I love love

[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's great. Yeah. No and the major movies are very good. They're very good

[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, one of the better young adult adaptations that came out. I was surprised

[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_00]: The more Morris is in it and he's from my favorite show new girl. Yeah, he's playing

[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Garrett Morris Garrett Morris and then funny enough

[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_01]: He told a story actually in the Vanity Fair first look article about this that he used to lie and say that his dad

[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Was Garrett Morris Garrett Morris?

[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_01]: And so a Cooper Hoffman of licorice pizza is playing Dick Ebersol

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_01]: He's the one who gives the the cool kind of like a little monologue in the middle

[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_01]: He was like they want you to fail

[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_01]: It's such it's such a great little little bit of dialogue streams there, too

[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_01]: You have Matt wood playing John Belushi Ella hunt playing Gilda Radner Corey Michael Smith as Chevy Chase Dylan O'Brien as Dan

[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Ackroyd and then you have some of the more famous writers like Rachel Senate is playing Rosie Schuster

[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_01]: You have Emily Farron as Lorraine Newman Kim Matula as Jane Curtain Taylor gray as Al Franken

[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_01]: McCabe Greg is Tom Davis Tommy Dewey as Michael Donahue

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Matthew Reese of the Americans is playing host George Carlin and

[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Succession star Nicholas Braun is playing both Jim Henson and Andy Kaufman. Oh, wow. Yeah, it's pretty cool

[00:07:23] [SPEAKER_01]: You know why I don't know the reason he's got range

[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Benny Safdie, you know

[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Benny Safdie was actually cast to do that but which one to be Andy Kaufman

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, but had to drop out this is a corner in IMDb

[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_00]: But I had to drop out doing do scheduling conflicts because of this Nicholas Braun plays two roles in this film

[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_00]: And Jim Henson and so they just decided

[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Interesting we're gonna let you do both right one of the other things that they are

[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Are including in here too is Nicholas Poldaini is playing Billy Crystal

[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Because Billy Crystal in case you don't know famously was supposed to be on the original episode of Saturday Night Live

[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_01]: But he got cut and it's something that he was never happy about

[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_01]: He was pretty pretty upset about it. And so he'll that that he'll make an appearance in there as well

[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I'm just I'm super excited about this movie. I think it looks great

[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I think my one reservation is that it's it's going to be a little too overly sentimental because it's obvious Jason Reitman fucking loves all of this

[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, maybe you're they're gonna pull some punches. Yeah, and I don't think they're maybe gonna hit as hard as the things that like

[00:08:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Didn't work and like the stuff that would maybe make certain things or people look bad

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_01]: You know

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe and it's gonna just really be more of like just like a shinebox treatment

[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_00]: You don't think he's gonna go cuz I kind of felt like he's gonna go Sorkin with this where

[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_00]: He's gonna play up some of the tension between the studio Laura Michaels

[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_06]: But but I think he'll do that, but I think he's gonna do it in a way that makes everyone more like come out on

[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Top. Oh certainly. Yeah. Yeah, but I mean again

[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Facebook right? I mean I was talking to the same thing with the social network, right?

[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, my second part is a jerk, but he was particularly a jerk in the social network, right?

[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_01]: But I don't think I have a feeling that Jason first of all Jason Reitman as much as I appreciate

[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_00]: There's no Aaron Sorkin. That's 100% sure but I

[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Had that vibe though in that I love this show

[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Did you guys watch studio 60 when it was on I did the bouncing around of this trailer?

[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Of course felt studio 60 like to me

[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because that's how Aaron Sorkin drags right you had the walk of talks

[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it kind of felt that way to me. No for sure

[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_00]: So then with that in mind then what are some things that you want to see in this film?

[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Because I want to know hardcore nudity obviously, but are they going to play up

[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Everything we learned about Chevy Chase from that first season in since

[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_00]: He was a jerk right also also

[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Wildly inappropriate right? Yeah with women and everything

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Are they gonna show that Chevy Chase or is he gonna be I feel a little more saccharin right now?

[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_06]: I think if anybody's gonna get the punches not pulled like Chevy Chase has done nothing to

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Rectify that situation over the years

[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm sure there's no love lost between anybody and I'm sure that if anybody on SNL side

[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_06]: Like let's say Lauren Michaels had a conversation with mr. Reitman at all, you know just in passing

[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_06]: March okay go you can go after Trevi like that's the maybe the one thing they will do is like he painted me even as

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_06]: A bigger asshole well hard to do because that guy's a fucking prick one of things that's interesting about this

[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Even though there's this wealth of material that they could have like looked at as far as like to fuel the the script and whatnot

[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Like live from New York and just the Bible kind of of yeah

[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, there's all these different books and interviews about their they didn't look at any older material

[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, they they went and they talked to people who are still around who were there to to bring it together

[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_01]: They even talked to the production designer from that first season and they got the actual schematics of

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Studio 8h at that time

[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_01]: So so yeah

[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_01]: I I'm very curious to see what they found out that like maybe there's maybe there's stuff that hasn't been in books yet or

[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Something like that you know cuz they they talked to a whole bunch of new people and like new interviews and stuff like that

[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, it could be it could be really cool. I'm very excited

[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I wish I was going to the Toronto International Film Festival where this is premiering but unfortunately I won't be up there

[00:11:21] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll be just crying

[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's get back into SNL Digital Shorts Nate which part do you say this the future because the first one that we watch was

[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Space Olympics. No, but that's a great segue

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_01]: So

[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Nate what season are we kicking off this next wave of SNL Digital Shorts with yeah

[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_00]: so in this episode we're gonna talk about season 34 in season 35 and so those that essentially covers

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_00]: 2008 and 2009 and

[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_00]: 2009 yeah, and so we're gonna talk about

[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_00]: You know there there are three seasons in to being on the show three and four seasons in and so

[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_00]: They've created quite a few digital shorts at this point. They're also

[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_00]: in my opinion

[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_00]: there's a lot of there seems to be a lot of pressure to create because

[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if I was just nostalgic the first batch we were watching and I liked more of those because you know

[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Moustache a play-to-roll

[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Or just this batch of seven or this batch of 30 some digital shorts

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_06]: Just didn't seem as strong to me as the first batch. So go ahead bread. No you got I had a

[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_06]: The prevailing theme with this second run of sketches these 35

[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_06]: I could I could probably count at least half

[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_06]: if not three quarters of these that had a

[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_06]: Pretty one note premise with one pretty big reveal or one pretty big joke

[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_06]: It made me laugh always have one ha and that was it though

[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_06]: Like there were so many of these that were just like oh, there's the turn and that's what it was

[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_06]: Whereas the ones that are at the top of the list are either

[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_06]: There's a lot going on that made me laugh the whole time obviously or they're a song that is a banger

[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_00]: So which is the difference right between when you have one or two notes that make you laugh

[00:14:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Between the thing that we love is the escalation, right?

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Does not go away even though that's the number one word that I use right then we all use is in sketches is escalation

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_06]: It happens here, too

[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_06]: But it makes it very very neat and I talked about in the moment. It made it very difficult

[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_06]: Like hey, where'd you write that one? Yeah, there's a traffic jam in the middle of my fucking list

[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_06]: Everything was good and then I laughed pretty hard once and that's the third one in a row now that I've done that with so

[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_06]: If it for me it came down to oh, here's my top ten and and here's the 14th one

[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_06]: We're watching does it crack my my new top ten and a lot of times. It was just no

[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_00]: It was it was clear for me. Who's the worst couple and

[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Then we had the top five I think five did six seven

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, maybe all the way to ten is fine

[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_00]: But like and then like it's not my list muddles like after six it gets really hard

[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Ten to twenty five

[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was I would say the overall the top ten here is not as strong as the top ten from the first wave

[00:15:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And then the next five after that I still I still like a pretty pretty decent amount

[00:15:12] [SPEAKER_01]: and then after that it's it's a pretty like decent dive as far as like there's there's maybe like one or two great laugh out loud

[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Moments, but otherwise just like oh, yeah, that was that was fine. Yeah, I agree

[00:15:22] [SPEAKER_01]: So let's let's talk about some of the the worst ones first

[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's see if we have the same bottom two I think that we might actually

[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Are you are you including things that didn't age all that well as far as why it might be?

[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, first of all that particular one wasn't very good in general. It wasn't so I think hey Murray Hill

[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's my body is my bottom. It is not my bottom

[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, oh James Franco defender. We know it is my second to the

[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_00]: What is what is your bottom that Nate Virginia Horson's pony?

[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_01]: What my that's like seven from the bottom for me? Yeah, that's not that bad like Christian wigs quirkiness automatically makes that way better than most

[00:16:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Of what's your I waited to laugh and I could not get it

[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_01]: What's your second to the bottom my second to the bottom is a couple of couple of homies?

[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, I had a couple of friends down because I didn't even care enough to write down their correct

[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that one was super weak. It was tough. Yeah couple of homies was 28 for me. So well, that's ridiculous because

[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_06]: Virginia horns and like Pony Express was no, it's not no it's so hey Murray to talk about the worst one

[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean hey Murray Hill. Hey Murray Hill

[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Easily right doesn't age very well because it is about James Franco having a little ding-dong and showing it to people and it's have yeah

[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_01]: It's an awkward date conversation. He's having with with Kristen wig and not a date just at a party outside

[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, that's right. She's just there at a party

[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_06]: So she is unassuming and he's just overexposing himself keeps talking about his big help and it's really awkward

[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Does not age well at all, but take take that out of it. Yeah

[00:16:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Like there's I'm saying like we laugh at juvenile humor things or we still sometimes can say we really laughed at that when we were

[00:16:59] [SPEAKER_00]: 20 but the reveal of this was not funny

[00:17:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Just doesn't do it. Yeah, no, it's not it's not working

[00:17:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I think that there was one of those things where like if you put Andy Samberg in there

[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_01]: It's maybe a little bit funnier and they thought it might be equally as funny if not funnier because it's someone like James Franco

[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Saying that and there's a certain level where that does work

[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_01]: But it's just it's a one-note joke that never really has any real escalation to it, you know, sure

[00:17:25] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah

[00:17:25] [SPEAKER_06]: Brenda and Sean was another one that was the bottom for the bottom. Yes

[00:17:29] [SPEAKER_01]: And especially but like it's weird because that one almost feels like it didn't really feel like a sketch

[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_01]: It felt like a most like a mood piece

[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_01]: You know
