Beyonce is back, baby! Kind of. Former Saturday Night Live cast member Maya Rudolph returned to host the show for the third time this week, and she brought back her Beyonce on Hot Ones impression. But that's not all. We also witnessed some British cave people, a hilarious Please Don't Destroy sketch, and an endearing Mother's Day tribute from the entire cast, among other things.
Join hosts Brad Oman, Nate Loucks, and Ben Konowitz as they delve into a review and recap of the May 11, 2024, episode of Saturday Night Live on the latest episode of the Ten to One Podcast.

[00:00:05] It's the Ten to One Podcast with your host Brad Homan
[00:00:11] featuring Ben Conowitz and
[00:00:14] Nate Lauch and
[00:00:17] Here's the podcast
[00:00:20] What do you think of that one? Yeah, but but but
[00:00:25] Are you sick?
[00:00:28] That's a source
[00:00:31] So it's like is he ever hosted SNL Arnold Schwarzenegger, I'm sure he must have right I feel oh if he didn't that would be
[00:00:39] Like why not but I've never seen a clip of him. Yeah, I can't recall any clips
[00:00:43] He was so he did he came on with Hans and Franz
[00:00:45] I do remember that but I'm not sure if that was for SNL for it was just for a different PSA
[00:00:49] Yeah, that's a good question. Actually. I'm sure Nate's looking it up right now as we delay
[00:00:53] I am and see if we can figure this out
[00:00:56] He has not he made a
[00:00:59] Cameo that does surprise me. That is crazy
[00:01:03] Yeah, you know he made a cameo in the
[00:01:06] 1988 episode hosted by Danny DeVito what film was that for a tweed Star Wars correct for twins
[00:01:13] And then he did a filmed cameo in the 1991 episode with
[00:01:20] Christian Slater to promote total recall
[00:01:23] Is that right or a Terminator? I mean 91 was that was the pumping up with
[00:01:28] Hans and Franz I think right there would have been Terminator 2 right
[00:01:32] They was filming in any one it came out 92 didn't so recall come out in 90. Oh, you're right. You're right. Yeah
[00:01:38] Yeah, no, I think you came out in 91. I think you're right. He uh, this was uh, no
[00:01:44] He was I like to think Lord Michaels for being under red hot chili peppers of the band of the year
[00:01:49] Look, I like to thank everyone the cat the best cast in the group in the United States of America
[00:01:53] And I want to tell you the people of California even though I'm not the governor yet I will be
[00:01:59] But when he says California you gotta do California. Yeah, it's like a Kali like I was I was going to be in the Californians
[00:02:08] See why haven't they done that?
[00:02:13] I'm seriously like kind of floored that our figure hasn't hosted SNL. That's wild
[00:02:18] Yes, me my me my best friend head with Harry. We're over here
[00:02:22] I do it had to carry tasker from we should we should write write a fake episode
[00:02:29] From the 90s though early 90s with references that he wouldn't know. Yeah, perfect
[00:02:35] Well you guys we did it. We had another great episode of Maya Rudolph hosting SNL
[00:02:41] With Arnold Schwarzenegger Wow future vintage SNL. I love it. I love it pretty well a pretty great bit to do actually
[00:02:47] I'm not joking that yeah, let's let's write it. Let's do it, but what we do have is the latest episode of Saturday Night Live season 49
[00:02:54] This is the penultimate episode of the season Maya Rudolph hosted for her third time
[00:03:01] She is actually among a small group of former cast members who have all hosted three times. Do you guys know who they are?
[00:03:10] Only three times not not three or more only three times
[00:03:13] Amy Poehler not Amy Poehler
[00:03:16] Tina Fey not Tina five times
[00:03:20] Just had a whole yeah, I'm sorry
[00:03:24] Three time hosts only oh, I know I know my bubba
[00:03:31] Who's the only murders in a building or Steve Martin Martin short my short balls
[00:03:39] See see Martin was never a cast member that's true and he's hosted like 20 times so yeah
[00:03:44] It's definitely not John Goodman no, let's count down the one starting with the most
[00:03:50] And then that have not actually been cast members. Okay, I'm gonna tell you who has it been Eddie Murphy three times Chris Rock
[00:03:56] Three times Jimmy Fallon three time and Julia Louis Dreyfus. Okay
[00:04:03] Rob Schneider Rob Schneider, I don't know if he's ever hosted. He has not there you go. We're missing out
[00:04:08] I don't think he's gonna
[00:04:11] By that
[00:04:13] What'd you what'd you think of this episode guys?
[00:04:16] What was the vibe like were you excited for this?
[00:04:18] I was I was fairly excited because I like a Maya Rudolph and like it's always fun when a former cast member comes comes back
[00:04:24] Cuz like, you know, there's gonna be throwbacks. You might have some special guests that kind of thing
[00:04:30] Overall, I would say I was not in love with this episode
[00:04:33] But I was in love with Maya Rudolph in this episode. I will agree with that
[00:04:38] That she was not an issue my feeling is not the problem it which we talked about this before
[00:04:43] Sometimes the sketches are fine in the host just doesn't do the job that's needed to perform the sketch
[00:04:50] This I think was just a problem with some of the sketches because she was doing she she performed at a high level
[00:04:55] She really did she was I mean, she's great. Like she's always been great when she was on SNL
[00:04:59] She was fantastic
[00:04:59] and yeah
[00:05:00] there was just something about
[00:05:01] The sketches that that a lot of them didn't feel like they really landed some of them felt like they could have used another draft
[00:05:07] Unlike the Kate McKinnon episode where it was stilted because she is supposed to be the weird one and supposed to blend in
[00:05:15] And now she's asked to be the you know, yeah the norm the straight person
[00:05:20] Unlike that episode. Well, she's gay. Okay, Maya Rudolph
[00:05:25] Is just playing and having fun and and it's firing on all cylinders
[00:05:31] So yeah, she fit in perfectly
[00:05:33] We'll talk about the sketches individually, but I think we all agree that it could have been better but Maya Rudolph was not the issue
[00:05:38] Yeah, exactly
[00:05:40] And speaking of having fun
[00:05:41] Let's just get into it because I was definitely having fun at the very top of the show because the cold open
[00:05:46] Was not a political sketch was not anything
[00:05:50] Satirical as far as the headlines are concerned like that
[00:05:51] But it was timely because it was a Mother's Day 2024 cold open now
[00:05:56] I will tell you guys usually when we do this Nate has a whole list of the writers that have done every sketch
[00:06:01] So far we're recording this on Sunday night and for some reason the available list of writers was extremely
[00:06:09] Limited well, we record on Sunday night. Normally we record on Monday, which the the list has been updated online by a lot
[00:06:15] yeah, and because
[00:06:18] They don't they don't publish this right? We find this out from the writers
[00:06:23] Yeah
[00:06:23] The writers will post something on Instagram usually there are a couple people online who will collect information like on the SNL wiki
[00:06:30] Or like someone on Twitter who is just taking it upon themselves to post whenever they find out something from Instagram or something like that
[00:06:35] But this isn't like anything that we can find out online through NBC
[00:06:39] Yeah
[00:06:39] or the credit the only writers that are specifically listed on a sketch by sketch basis in the official credits on SNL are for
[00:06:46] The pre-taped sketches and other otherwise they don't
[00:06:49] Attach writers are also they have directors and stuff like that. Those are a little bit bigger deal
[00:06:53] Yeah, exactly. So so Brad had to do it this time and
[00:06:56] Yeah
[00:06:58] Nate was real busy with his pastor communion, you know youth
[00:07:03] Youth service whatever it is
[00:07:06] But but yeah, so I did my best. I do have some of the writers but for a lot of them
[00:07:10] I don't but I did my best so
[00:07:13] Mother day 20 to 24 Colbin almost the entire cast brings their mothers on the show
[00:07:18] Except for please don't destroy who are only allowed to bring their fathers
[00:07:21] Do you know who the two cast members were who did not have their mothers appear in this bit?
[00:07:26] I
[00:07:27] Let me just think about this Michael Che correct Nate Heidi Gardner. Correct Ben. Those are the only two
[00:07:35] Michael Chase mother I believe passed away not too long ago if I if I remember incorrectly
[00:07:40] What about Heidi Gardner's Heidi Gardner's mother is very much alive and it's very much part of her life and is a
[00:07:44] Very big fan of Heidi Gardner. So I'm not entirely sure why she wasn't there
[00:07:47] I love the fact that it could be literally a scheduling conflict. She is from Los Angeles. So pretty far flight
[00:07:53] To be on national television with your daughter
[00:07:55] I'm other yeah, exactly. Listen, it's Mother's Day. It's her day speaking of Mother's Day
[00:07:59] Do you guys remember because this is a fairly recent development in SNL history?
[00:08:04] The previous times they have done Mother's Day celebrations like this in the past
[00:08:09] I mean they I do remember this happening and I remember Kenan's mom
[00:08:17] So I'm sure they've done it two or three times, right they have done it exactly three times
[00:08:22] They did it on May 9th 2015 with hosts
[00:08:27] Sure, yeah
[00:08:29] No, no Reese Witherspoon. Oh, that's what I was gonna say. Oh
[00:08:33] May 12 2018 with host Justin Timberlake. No
[00:08:38] You're thinking of the mother lover episode where there were only two Mother's Day sketches and it was in 2009
[00:08:42] Okay. Well, I tried Amy Schumer in 2018 and then the most recent one was May 8th 2021 with one of our favorite hosts
[00:08:50] 2021
[00:08:52] Travis Kelsey
[00:08:54] One of our favorite hosts Chris Hemsworth. Nate you're very close. It was Elon Musk
[00:09:01] You rascal I got you an Elon Musk mom was there so not disappointed in her stupid son
[00:09:08] What did you guys think about this opening? Obviously, it's it's adorable. It's charming. Yeah
[00:09:12] Yeah, you know it was I I'm never going to expect the moms to like nail the lines and be of course not
[00:09:20] It's just part of the fun. It's adorable. Yeah, it is. I have no problems with this whatsoever
[00:09:25] This was like you said
[00:09:27] This was the start of an a political episode almost as a whole
[00:09:31] Yeah, we can update there just wasn't a lot which I was fine
[00:09:35] It actually felt kind of almost at times like a throwback episode like an episode that could have aired when Maya Rudolph was still
[00:09:41] A cast member and I'm fine with that. Yeah, absolutely when things can be evergreen, you know
[00:09:45] I wasn't upset about it. Not at all. It was adorable. I love seeing everybody's my loved Marcelo her name is his mom
[00:09:51] Oh god, it's so funny and Michael Che
[00:09:55] And then we also had the my favorite bits were just because they was extra cute because of this because ego
[00:10:02] Wodim's mom and Bowen Yang's mom have still have heavy. Oh sure
[00:10:06] But they were like pushing through it and everything and I love that Bowen Yang helped his mom land the hall pass punchline
[00:10:11] She's not gonna get it we got to get it out there egos mom
[00:10:14] I mean if you I I rebounded just so I could kind of hear what you're saying and just the like
[00:10:20] It's a great bit though. It is like she would have been a doctor like thanks Lauren
[00:10:23] Like that's a great joke the way. Yeah, the way she was thinking one Michael. Oh gosh
[00:10:27] Yeah, no, I really really like that. No man. Yeah Bowen's mom. She just went for it, man
[00:10:32] That's awesome. And he was so happy. Oh, yeah
[00:10:34] It's a great way to like start off a feel-good episode
[00:10:38] Part of the fun for me are the charm of it is like, you know, the cast members loved having their mom
[00:10:43] Oh, like it was just like it was so much fun for them and I
[00:10:47] Michael long fellows was good too. I mean they're all very good
[00:10:51] But just like except for the ones that bomb those are for dad
[00:10:55] Michael Longfellow has a stand-up bit about having a super attractive mom
[00:11:00] Yeah
[00:11:02] Marcelo
[00:11:04] Hernandez and Michael Longfellow not
[00:11:07] unattractive mothers
[00:11:09] Because they're still children and her mothers are like my age. Yeah. Oh
[00:11:14] Shit, I realized that Marcelo Hernandez mom is 41. Yeah probably
[00:11:20] So so yeah, so that was the cold open and I don't know if it was the the cold open that did it
[00:11:25] But in this episode Mikey day has now officially been in 600 SNL sketches
[00:11:31] Good for him and Marcelo Hernandez hit a hundred sketches
[00:11:35] Both well deserves that Mikey is
[00:11:38] From behind the scenes of what I've read such a prolific writer. Yeah and can just churn out
[00:11:43] 17 ideas in a week
[00:11:45] Yeah, like that man's the echo of that Beavis and butthead sketch is still hanging around
[00:11:49] It is one that's going to live in seriously because not only was a huge like immediately
[00:11:54] It was one of like the most watch SNL sketches in recent history
[00:11:58] They appeared on the fall guy red carpet as Beavis and butthead did interviews as the characters
[00:12:04] Not not be was in butthead, but as the guy Jeff and whatever his name
[00:12:08] Yeah, and then now you have this reference to Mikey day playing butthead here in this sketch. So it's got some legs
[00:12:13] Yeah, it's not it's not going anywhere and I'm fine with it. It's a it's the new David s pumpkins
[00:12:18] Yeah, I just hope that they know maybe they'll do us
[00:12:20] I'll know that they won't bring them back, but they'll do another different character like they've I hope they wait though
[00:12:25] Oh, yeah, I'm sure I hope they wait. Well, how do they do it next week with Jake Gyllenhaal?
[00:12:29] Well, they're gonna do it with Gosling again. I'm sure next time he's on but he's only on like every four years
[00:12:34] Maybe that'll change
[00:12:35] You know what? He could he could have he could break less though
[00:12:38] I will say like I like it but one thing when I didn't really talk about last time was how annoying it
[00:12:43] It's when he breaks constantly who?
[00:12:46] Gosling
[00:12:49] Hey your point figures at
[00:12:51] Gosling, but what about your girl Heidi Gardner who she so it's rare for her to break not anymore
[00:12:57] Oh
[00:12:58] A little bit of a issue here there. Yeah, but by and large Gosling broke on like Jimmy Fallon level on every sketch
[00:13:04] It let's go. That's good. But it was also but it was also never disrupted to the point where it really felt like I threw
[00:13:09] Anything off and that's the key
[00:13:12] Next time baby goose just just back out a little bit. Okay, but he does that's his thing. He always does
[00:13:17] All right, the Mother's Day monologue Maya Rudolph
[00:13:21] Returns to host for a third times talks about celebrating Mother's Day on Saturday night live before learning
[00:13:26] That she is mother. So I don't I didn't know what this is
[00:13:32] It's basically the mom version of being daddy. Gotcha. I mean that makes sense
[00:13:37] I got I mean, sorry, I should have said I know what it is now
[00:13:40] I didn't know when the sketch started what that was so good for her another throwback though to
[00:13:46] grandiose musical performances
[00:13:49] Like we haven't had a great musical performance in the monologue in a while
[00:13:54] That I was intricate and this was advanced. Yeah, this was this was a whole
[00:13:59] Something that honestly only somebody like Maya Rudolph can pull off
[00:14:03] This is my Rudolph Fred Armisen level. Yeah, you know musical improv or not improv but like musical
[00:14:09] No, it was it was impressive especially because because it's it has a hip-hop cadence to it
[00:14:12] So you're getting a lot of lyrics out and so like it's not
[00:14:15] You know, it's like Madonna Vogue a little absolutely
[00:14:18] Yeah that little like break where she's doing the speaking lines
[00:14:21] But like it's and doing that rhythmically and keeping up with his heart
[00:14:25] she did have one flub where it messed up a rhyme when she was talking about the
[00:14:30] Martha Stewart had good her and then Mary Catherine Gallagher. It was supposed to be her but she said hair
[00:14:35] So it didn't rhyme and it felt weird
[00:14:39] Like she was getting out of breath oh
[00:14:41] How could she know?
[00:14:43] And then there was only other one one of the dancers stepped in front of her a little bit
[00:14:47] So she's like kind of broke and smiled a little bit because it like did you see that part?
[00:14:50] No, I didn't so when they're busting through the doors and it and then there was a kind of a curtain sheet that was up
[00:14:55] Yeah to dancers were supposed to kind of go in front of her and one kind of clipped her a little bit
[00:14:59] Yeah, you can just see her stop and smile and kind of like oh, it was really great
[00:15:03] But she I mean with that happening just being able to just get right through it
[00:15:07] You know, it didn't throw her off like that's crazy. She's a consummate professional. She was fantastic
[00:15:12] I loved it and I imagine a lot of I mean aside from being having a long history with SNL to
[00:15:17] Don't forget she also had a variety show with Martin Short that she did for a while. She's just that person right?
[00:15:22] She didn't trust her with this no
[00:15:24] This I couldn't probably even with those small little foibles. They couldn't have gone better like
[00:15:29] at the beginning, you know with Sarah's Sarah Sherman and Bo and Yang you could just see how much like she is
[00:15:37] Thought of in the cast right as they look at her as they talk to her and they set up that that whole number
[00:15:43] Like they picked the right two cast members to bring a very vibrant vibe to because it
[00:15:49] Diva it was very much Bowen being and yes. Yes, and it's it's that he was having fun forcefulness
[00:15:54] Yeah, it was needed
[00:15:56] So that I believe that was written by Jake Nordwin because he posted on Instagram that most of the credit for this goes to
[00:16:02] August white funnily enough if you don't know this August white is a black woman. So
[00:16:08] August white and I'm pretty sure that's how you pronounce her first name because it's
[00:16:12] August with an E at the yeah, I never know. I never know who knows it's a guy
[00:16:16] It's Augustus and I even tried to like see if there was interview or someone said her name
[00:16:19] I always go to YouTube
[00:16:20] I'm like ever see if I can find and they specifically mentioned that the choreography was done by Sarah Hogleby
[00:16:25] So congratulations Sarah for doing an amazing job pulling off. That's actually put out September
[00:16:31] All right, so
[00:16:33] Here's another fun fact about Maya Rudolph hosting SNL
[00:16:36] Do you guys pay attention to the bumper photos when I do? Yeah, Ben do you you don't give a shit?
[00:16:42] It's not that I don't give shit. I look at them. I'm like, oh, yeah
[00:16:44] I do particularly because I use a bumper photo like when yeah, of course for the episode
[00:16:50] I use one for the front page image for my review on I only I only do really notice them when it's it's clearly
[00:16:56] A takeoff or not famous something else and I and when that connection hits my brain
[00:17:00] I do know you see the connection for this
[00:17:03] Ben probably the one like one of people who's definitely not gonna get well
[00:17:06] This is a this is a little bit harder though
[00:17:08] It is a little harder but it's something she's been doing for a while every time she hosts
[00:17:12] So for those who don't know Maya Rudolph's mother is Minnie Riperton. She is a famous soul singer and songwriter
[00:17:19] Yeah sounds like a made-up the original loving you song. It was sung. It was like a burger commercial
[00:17:25] Yeah, sung by Maya Rudolph's mom
[00:17:29] So some of the bumper photos that she did this time are
[00:17:32] Recreations of her mother's album covers and she's done this several times and you knew this no
[00:17:37] No, I did not that's research buddy that's research that's my job that's called doing the work
[00:17:42] Okay, cuz though because you guys said, you know
[00:17:44] Oh when it's a famous recreation and like like you were in on it like oh I saw that I was like totally
[00:17:50] Mini Rippenhower. No. No, I learned this doing
[00:17:54] Ripperton Ripper Ripper hour
[00:17:58] Sorry
[00:18:00] Alright, there you go hot ones with Beyonce to Beyonce played by Maya Rudolph returns to hot ones
[00:18:06] In her cowboy Carter era Mikey Dave plays host Sean Evans and Kenan Thompson appears as Beyonce's assistant to Raphael
[00:18:13] This is a sorry real quick. This is a much better Sean Evans impression
[00:18:17] Yes, Mikey days voice was way high the first time he did it
[00:18:20] Yes
[00:18:20] It's like he actually paid attention to his cadence and tried to mimic him a little better
[00:18:24] Yes, which means that Sean Evans you finally finally made it
[00:18:28] So it's funny that they did this since we had a little bit of a snafu trying to remember if it was an SNL
[00:18:33] Real so hard actually and I were watching it
[00:18:39] We just talked about this I was so happy now, what did you guys think about it?
[00:18:42] How did it compare to the first I don't think it I don't think it caught the magic of the first
[00:18:47] It didn't but there was still enjoyed myself physical compilations in the mouth. Yeah. Oh my god
[00:18:52] It's so good throws that glass of milk in these. What did you say like kill yourself Gollum? Yeah
[00:19:00] Like where are we with taking the bones out and put the bones back in like there were some very fun terms of phrase
[00:19:05] It's just because of Maya Rudolph. Yeah, yeah, it didn't add anything new though
[00:19:10] There was nothing like like the Beavis and by head sketch was in a second sketch to that
[00:19:16] What was the first one that they did part Simpson? Yeah. Yeah, and so they they they escalated that right?
[00:19:22] They made it even better in the second one
[00:19:24] They didn't do that to this and I think and I think this was a detriment in the first time
[00:19:28] They did it too. I do think that there's a problem of them being too dedicated to recreating
[00:19:34] What the vibe of hot ones is and there's too much like dead space and I try to fill it by having silly names for
[00:19:39] The hot sauces so I wish that like that's the only time well
[00:19:43] I mean, I want to write for us and all in my entire life
[00:19:46] But just sitting there and coming up with the name fake hot sauce would just be so much fun
[00:19:50] Yeah, you know Satan's asshole whatever they did like oh man. That's that's a good day at the office
[00:19:54] I don't care who you are. That's true. That's very true. I know I did read though a lot of people online loved this one
[00:19:59] I'm sure they did
[00:20:00] I mean people love my Rudolph's Beyonce and you know doing anything about Beyonce these days
[00:20:05] People online are watching hot ones too because it's an online show
[00:20:12] He's so good at his job that there are super cuts of times where celebrities stop the interview to say that's a great question
[00:20:18] Yeah, I've never been asked or or how did you find that exactly? And I remember watching him season one
[00:20:24] I was an early adopter of this and I know I was there before was I don't watch anything on YouTube?
[00:20:31] It was the only show because I like hot wings
[00:20:33] I like hot sauce so I looked it up for that reason and then I was like
[00:20:37] This guy and why is he bringing up like, you know
[00:20:40] T pains
[00:20:43] Rapper yeah, he loved interview. Rad. He's so many rappers to start with
[00:20:46] I mean, he that's his only could get really he really liked him. Well, it's funny
[00:20:50] He started with rappers then he went to comedians and then that's when like more famous people started and now it's like
[00:20:56] Everyone right like you're not you you're not famous unless you've done hot. Yeah, it's like hosting SNL
[00:21:02] It's like being on being asked to do that is like write a passage now
[00:21:05] Yeah, you got these so who's the most famous person that's done hot ones then?
[00:21:10] Didn't Obama do it. I don't think Obama know he did between two ferns
[00:21:14] That's true, which is still a huge thing
[00:21:17] I think I mean Kevin Hart's done it. He's probably one of the bigger stars in the world that's done it
[00:21:24] Has the rock done it?
[00:21:29] Will Pharaoh's done it multiple a couple times. Yeah, I mean there's plenty of a list are so yeah
[00:21:34] I just want to know who's the big I mean, I think there's there's a is there a Beyonce little it's I mean
[00:21:39] like who
[00:21:40] other than like
[00:21:42] Former president size and pretty much everyone I mean see if it's Spielberg hasn't done it right but like
[00:21:46] But it doesn't really do filming. Yeah, it would be hilarious just get older because like
[00:21:51] It'll buy an Eastwood
[00:21:54] This one's called the mule that's what SNL should do is like just do like pick up a panel who haven't done
[00:22:01] Okay connecting hot ones SNL. Did you guys see the Conan O'Brien hot ones? Oh
[00:22:05] Of course, I mean if you're not seen it has to it is it is one of the best hot ones episodes
[00:22:12] They've ever done one of the best things I've seen on YouTube. I can't
[00:22:16] When when you know Connor Brian's gonna go for it and you're still surprised
[00:22:20] That's the best as an aside to if you're a Conan fan
[00:22:23] You should watch Conan know Brian must go on max because it's hilarious for episodes easy breathing but looking at the the
[00:22:30] Looking at the the cast or the guests for hot ones in season 23, which is the current season the pantheon if you will
[00:22:36] You've got Sydney Sweeney John Oliver Barry
[00:22:40] Cole kill Cole Keoghan Keoghan. Thank you little dickie Quinta Brunson Finn Wolff hard
[00:22:46] Jamie Dornan Zayn Malik Gwyneth Paltrow ice spice Shakira and Conan O'Brien
[00:22:51] I mean you can you can argue that maybe you're not an ice spice fan ice spice is huge though
[00:22:56] Like these are huge huge guests and they get pretty much who they want to get
[00:23:02] Like in the history right Gordon Ramsay Paul Rudd Dave Grohl, you know
[00:23:06] They grow was Neil deGrasse Tyson has done it Burton Ernie. Do you know Shaquille O'Neal has done it?
[00:23:11] He's probably one of the bigger another great episode. If you've not seen it is the Jennifer Lawrence one. Yeah, she's fantastic
[00:23:17] Yes, and not just for the reasons you're thinking
[00:23:20] Yeah, yeah. Yeah. All right. Let's get back to Saturday night laugh
[00:23:23] Please don't destroy explore page
[00:23:27] Ben Marshall John Higgins and Martin Hurley
[00:23:29] He who also co-wrote the sketch with Will Steven are having dinner with their girlfriends
[00:23:33] Ago Wodham Chloe Feynman and Sarah Sherman and then they're forced to play a game where they must reveal their Instagram
[00:23:40] explore pages Maya Rudolph appears as
[00:23:43] UNISA confidence and Marcelo Hernandez appears as a waiter guys. Let's get out our Instagram explore pages right now
[00:23:51] And talk about what's on them Ben Ben Ben talk about what's on yours I don't I didn't know that was a thing
[00:23:57] I'm gonna guess is a lot of awkward videos. Is that the search function? No
[00:24:01] I still don't really understand what it is. So it it no it is
[00:24:04] It's when you go to your search page and that and that's what what is appears there as real
[00:24:09] So the little magnifying glass, yeah, just click that and it's gonna be a lot of pretty awkward videos
[00:24:14] Okay, it is
[00:24:17] Yeah, great job Nate
[00:24:20] I have a lot of pictures of Dua Lipa in mine. So do you really yeah?
[00:24:25] Funny clips Dua Lipa minor likely going to be dogs because Britney Spears like a lot of dog videos looks like I've got
[00:24:33] But Ben hey explain to you why you have so many explain to our listeners
[00:24:36] Why you have so many Nate has decided to try to ruin my algorithm by sending me
[00:24:41] So many cringy videos of like got people looking at the camera going hey girl
[00:24:50] I love you. Oh, yeah. No, it's just I got a lot of hot dog memes and
[00:24:56] basketball in some roast videos
[00:25:03] But I actually love this I thought it was hilarious it was it was a very funny sketch um kudos to
[00:25:09] Whoever was the makeup the neck makeup just awful. It just looks I mean by stuff by awful
[00:25:15] I mean it looks so good. It may be uncomfortable. Yeah
[00:25:18] Like I felt that phone in my throat the 9-1-1 call through his neck
[00:25:23] And the blurred swinging of her
[00:25:27] That was the top-notch the best
[00:25:30] Laughed out loud for sure yeah
[00:25:32] and this is I love when Maya Rudolph does like older characters like this to it when you
[00:25:37] You can hear it in her voice and just what she brings to it. Yeah, no this was great
[00:25:41] Can we talk again though? Please don't destroy gets escalation right this sketch just kept on escalating
[00:25:47] And it kept on getting better. I just like you knew where it's going right as soon as they say the guys and they're always like
[00:25:54] Just going to ruin the night
[00:25:57] But that's the thing though is you know where it's going and you want to see what kind of devices
[00:26:02] They're gonna use so throwing it into the soup or whatever was what's funny to me, right?
[00:26:06] Yeah, and then is there a bird like it was just they all three look at the bird right there
[00:26:11] There's also a great setup early on too
[00:26:13] It feels like an innocent part of the conversation because they're talking about going somewhere for like their honeymoon or something
[00:26:18] Yeah, just do false wait. This is why we're going to sue false false
[00:26:22] I actually really like this. I thought it was really fun
[00:26:26] Yeah, all right teacher PSA a group of teachers Maya Rudolph Ken Thompson Heidi Gardner
[00:26:32] And you just muked egg of Wodum punky Johnson James Austin Johnson Bowen Yang Sarah Sherman and Michael Longfellow
[00:26:38] Deliver an end-of-year public service announcement and declare that the students have officially won
[00:26:45] That's the that's it I just I needed to hear that I can spell it yeah
[00:26:51] Tsi-dd when it got pushed together
[00:26:53] She said it I laughed out loud and every time she did it I laughed out loud
[00:26:56] Yeah, that is enough for me to think this is a good sketch overall. It's fine
[00:26:59] That's the that I say this word about six hundred twenty eight times today
[00:27:03] Yeah, I will say this was an okay, it's fine I guarantee you if you talk to any teachers
[00:27:08] It's been passed around and they absolutely loved it
[00:27:10] And I'm sure it hit with them perfectly fine
[00:27:12] But I felt like it was it was just missing some kind of secret sauce to like really make it hit it kind
[00:27:17] Of felt like I was hoping for that that what ego said
[00:27:20] I was looking I was looking for three or four versions of that
[00:27:22] Yeah, where it's like this is really funny even if you're not a teacher
[00:27:25] I almost it almost felt like there should have been a little more specificity to it like it almost
[00:27:29] Didn't really feel like it dug in enough like I feel like there would have been a lot more that you
[00:27:33] And maybe it's because they're not them or teachers. Yeah
[00:27:36] So and I'll also I don't know why they went this route instead of just doing something that would have been like a much more
[00:27:42] convincing backdrop
[00:27:43] awful fans awful green screen
[00:27:48] It was really lazy bad green screen to the point that Chloe Feynman was where notes it worse
[00:27:53] Yeah
[00:27:53] It was really and like when they were moving the camera to like I hate when the green screen wiggles
[00:27:57] Because of like what they're doing the camera like at the very least
[00:28:00] Should have had just like a real fake backdrop and I wonder if this because this was a like they shuffled things around and they
[00:28:06] Actually did use this when they weren't gonna use it and maybe no maybe I will say I go did very well
[00:28:13] Yeah, she was the standout in this one for sure be otherwise this sketch
[00:28:16] I would just lukewarm it was good. It was fine. It was fine. It was it was
[00:28:22] Better than bad. I think you know, I didn't hate it
[00:28:25] But again, if you don't have a ghost character in there, it's really not like you said Brad
[00:28:29] I can see why educators would find this
[00:28:32] Because I think it's very much on point what their experiences is are right now is there in the school year? Yeah, 100%
[00:28:39] All right, British caveman one that Ben. I'm sure just eight
[00:28:45] All I could think about as I watch this is Ben
[00:28:48] This is what he hears whenever he hears British anybody's British fucking so stupid
[00:28:53] Oh, yeah, our listeners might not know this because I think this is a go flicks yourself
[00:28:57] Ben Ben frequently makes fun of the British accent and mainly though
[00:29:02] If there's like a woman that is British that these two find attractive other. Oh, yeah. No cuz they're
[00:29:14] Yeah, whatever he's making he's saying their accent is terrible not sexy
[00:29:18] It's not every accent was you doing it exactly. I this sketch they heard me the writers
[00:29:26] Responded to my letters and they made a sketch for me. I loved it
[00:29:30] This was no notes a bit of a throwback. It was just dumb. Yeah, right. Yeah, it was just fun and dumb
[00:29:35] It was very stupid Nat Geo airs a special look at British cavemen with James Austin Johnson hosting and then Maya Rudolph
[00:29:41] Bowen Yang Marcella Hernandez Molly Carney Chloe Trost Chloe Feynman and redis mugs Heidi Gardner Ego Woda Mikey Day and Kenan Thompson
[00:29:48] Appearing as British cavemen and Sarah Sherman making a brief appearance as a French cave woman, you know
[00:29:53] You know what? I was also thinking this would have been a better sketch for Mick Jagger to do a cameo
[00:30:01] Because Mikey Day appears as Mick Jagger gave me it was good. This was just so stupid. I loved it
[00:30:06] I thought it was okay
[00:30:07] This was one where like I did like the premise of it and I
[00:30:11] Appreciated how well they did the various British accents without actually saying any words
[00:30:16] That was one of the most impressive to me as far as performers go that that was funny to see
[00:30:20] But yeah, it was such a one-note, you know
[00:30:23] I see but I like I think that it's okay though because
[00:30:26] This is one of the rare times where I don't need any escalation because the variety was so across the board
[00:30:31] I like just I was waiting for everybody else to do their better
[00:30:34] There's like a category for me that it's so dumb. It's funny
[00:30:37] Yeah kind of sketch and that's what this was for me
[00:30:39] It was so dumb
[00:30:40] It was it was varied enough that I that I was on board
[00:30:42] It didn't never long
[00:30:43] I never quite hit that level for me cuz I do I do appreciate a good stupid sketch
[00:30:47] And this is it's right on the cusp I just wish there was something a little bit more I could see that
[00:30:53] A little weird it was fine ending with Sarah Sherman as a French person sure
[00:30:58] Yeah
[00:31:00] Loved it Ben just loves making fun of British people. I think
[00:31:03] But I loved I loved the stupid British accents
[00:31:07] It was just so great and they get whether you gave keen in the first the actual words. Yeah
[00:31:11] It's perfect. What was it? It's a little blot in it
[00:31:14] It's a bit hot in it. It's a bit hot in it. That's what it was
[00:31:18] All right next sketch
[00:31:19] Can you pick me up a pre-tape where Maya Rudolph plays a mom?
[00:31:23] Who has to make up excuses to pick her daughter up from a sleepover without embarrassing her?
[00:31:28] Mikey day Heidi Gardner and Kenan Thompson also appear this one may have been written by Ryan Spears
[00:31:34] He posted about it on his insta
[00:31:35] It didn't necessarily make it clear if it's because he wrote it or if or usually what his moments were
[00:31:40] He didn't mention anybody else either, so I don't know if it was a solo effort
[00:31:43] But yeah, but he seemed like he was involved in some capacity this
[00:31:46] Did you guys ever do that when you were a kid have your parents come pick you up from a sleepover?
[00:31:50] I did I did I did once and it's because the friends smoking in the house the friend that I was staying at
[00:31:56] He had a they had a baby brother who was not wearing a diaper and he pissed on my bag
[00:32:02] And I was like mom. I gotta get out of here. It's just ironic as adult though like
[00:32:07] That you're into that
[00:32:10] Please
[00:32:13] I actually really really enjoyed this and I love the escalation of it. What got me was the cicadas
[00:32:21] Like Kenan as the dad be like she's having a period
[00:32:26] But it would be I just thought it was it was cute I wanted ever it was that's the thing for me
[00:32:31] It was more cute than it was clever
[00:32:33] I I wanted it to be funnier and I thought I thought it was going to
[00:32:36] Escalate and get to a point where it was a little more absurd a little sharper
[00:32:40] But it did feel like it lean intentionally leaned into more of that like this one of those like it was just kids for parents
[00:32:45] Like me. Yeah, it was one of those soft things where it's like you get the heart of it
[00:32:48] And like you appreciate on a certain level and you could you know when SNL is doing that because the way it exactly
[00:32:54] Right when it is a soft sentimental end to it. It means you were never gonna get a sharp visceral take
[00:33:00] Yeah, which is fine. But again, I was hoping for more
[00:33:04] but for me like I
[00:33:05] The ones that I love that are like this are like the ones where they do the holiday stuff or like they they are showing
[00:33:11] Like the nice family movements and then cutting to the sugar family moments because the ends on a very heartwarming moment all the time
[00:33:17] Right and I like so I like that and this I was hoping for something like that
[00:33:21] But it just never quite got like that to be truly there
[00:33:23] There's so many things that they again. This is a playground
[00:33:26] Yeah
[00:33:27] Could have done any joke there and that's the thing too is they do so many different punchlines
[00:33:31] But like none of them were like absolutely laugh out loud hilarious me except for the cicadas
[00:33:37] We're here to arrest the girl also made me laugh
[00:33:39] but I I think this is a sketch where you could send to even your non SNL
[00:33:47] Fan friends, right? Oh, yeah
[00:33:49] Or your grandma or like this just seems like there's a lot of sketches that were yeah very friendly to like be able to
[00:33:55] Send your family like oh, you'll appreciate this
[00:33:57] Yeah, and and I don't know because maybe Maya Rudolph has four kids and like I don't know if she just
[00:34:01] Genuinely liked making this because she had this experience maybe but I liked it. It was it was saccharine right but yeah
[00:34:08] You know who my Rudolph's husband is right?
[00:34:12] Correct me
[00:34:14] By the way, I never win quizzes like that so
[00:34:18] I know I if you ever listen to our other podcasts go fix yourself
[00:34:21] You know the worst game player not great, but you do you try
[00:34:26] He doesn't usually get one right one right again, and that's it. He doesn't know a lot of things. I don't know
[00:34:33] Alright weekend update with Colin Jost and Michael Che
[00:34:36] We can update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the week's biggest news like Stormy Daniels
[00:34:42] Testimony about having sex with Donald Trump Robert F. Kennedy jr.'s parasitic brain worm
[00:34:47] Kim Kardashian's Met Gala dress and a cruise ship worker attacking three people with scissors
[00:34:56] Now
[00:34:57] Every week we talk about what co-host Brad Omen
[00:35:01] Thinks about weekend update and it's it's the birdometer where he tries to to pinpoint exactly how good the interaction was between Michael Che
[00:35:08] And Colin Jost there's like a there has to be a certain camaraderie
[00:35:11] Friendship playfulness spanish or an action. Yeah fun happening between them this week
[00:35:18] What do you guys think the birdometer?
[00:35:22] I'm gonna type it in right now because we don't trust you know
[00:35:24] I don't trust you and then put your phone down and trust has just been abused in this podcast. It's very true
[00:35:28] We got we put it down
[00:35:31] I
[00:35:33] Always go first. I'm gonna let you go first this time. I really do go first a lot
[00:35:35] So I'm gonna let you get guests first
[00:35:38] This was hard for me. This one was hard for me because a I'm just not good at this in general
[00:35:44] But be also that I mean lately they have been on kind of a terror of
[00:35:49] Like the brown has been quite highly. Yep. Yep
[00:35:52] But I didn't think this is bad though, no, I thought it was pretty high and
[00:35:57] There's some good jokes here. I Michael Che
[00:35:59] He's just he's on I just love Michael Che being my good if he does what he's doing right now
[00:36:05] And has done for the past three episodes and he finishes the season. I'll be very happy
[00:36:08] I just he's just calling himself out. He's saying that I love this episode. This is Miami episode
[00:36:13] Like he's just had he just doesn't care. I love it, but but I do think it's lower than previous one
[00:36:18] so I'm gonna go with
[00:36:20] 79% 82
[00:36:23] Nate wins because it is unlike my phone 80
[00:36:30] Yes, yes
[00:36:32] So you brought the Michael Che thing that fits into a little bit
[00:36:36] But it would have been better if Jost was reacting to it
[00:36:39] He was doing it was very one-sided che reacting to the audience. Correct. Yeah
[00:36:43] No, there was still a little bit of back a little bit a little bit. They were both having fun though
[00:36:49] I want to comment that that Michael Che I am gonna miss him so much as a week
[00:36:53] I did host when he's no longer in that seat
[00:36:57] More so and I don't know if I would have
[00:36:59] Realized this when he became the weekend update guy, right?
[00:37:03] That where he's at now and the confidence he has and the fun he has
[00:37:09] Almost Norm Macdonald like at times especially with the jokes. He goes for he loves the growners
[00:37:15] The most like Norm MacDonald sense which and it's by far
[00:37:18] And I feel like he's only evolved in that last couple years. Yeah, and and I love it. I just love it
[00:37:24] I agree. Yeah, I agree. He will I mean obviously
[00:37:28] They're gonna do the 50th and they're gonna do with the last season and then maybe he'll move on beyond that
[00:37:32] But we're gonna get another year
[00:37:34] Yeah of Colin Jones and Michael J and I just can't wait for when when Michael J truly knows he's done
[00:37:40] And then that little run at towards the end. I mean who knows I do wonder if he'll be done after the 50th season
[00:37:45] I think so. It's it's gonna be there's gonna be so much evolution after that
[00:37:50] Yeah, I'm really interested to see what happens
[00:37:53] I'll be I'll be curious if Lorne Michaels really like has eye on retirement after 50 years if I'll let somebody take over
[00:37:59] He I mean he's really he is 80 one right? He's actually no hold it's but he's definitely up there
[00:38:05] Yeah, but but still does every time I see him. I'm like this dude still got it
[00:38:09] No
[00:38:10] I mean he clearly knows what he's doing and but they they did just set the 50th anniversary special for SNL will be happening in
[00:38:16] February of 2025 it'll be 80 in November
[00:38:19] And it will be on it'll be on a Sunday though because and that's what they that's doing a whole week
[00:38:23] Yeah, ever and some people are coming in like Sunday
[00:38:25] It's like yeah fucking Sunday cuz that's what they did when they did the fucking 40th to you assholes
[00:38:29] Like it's a prime time special. You don't do it on Saturday cuz no one's watching you want everyone to watch
[00:38:34] It's gonna be an incredible shift all I know is it's gonna keep on going
[00:38:43] Back to weekend update though one of my favorite jokes was Colin Jost
[00:38:47] Did the Marvel joke yeah, yeah, so good. It was just so it was really I love it
[00:38:52] When they met when he mentions his wife, I love the inside baseball stuff
[00:38:55] I mean, it's it's fun. Yeah, of course
[00:38:57] All right
[00:38:58] So we had a two guests at the weekend update desk the first one which was actually
[00:39:02] Alluded to in the Mother's Day opening in case you guys didn't notice that
[00:39:05] We have Robert F
[00:39:07] Kennedy jr's brain worm played by Sarah Sherman who stops by to endorse
[00:39:12] RFK jr. For president this was written by Josh Patton and Jake Nordwin with Sarah Sherman
[00:39:17] What did you guys think of Sarah Sherman's wild brain worm Sarah Sherman only does weekend update?
[00:39:23] Stuff to roast Colin Jost and I'm here for it every time Roasty Josty
[00:39:28] Yeah, although this didn't feel like it was a full-on. It wasn't a joke roast
[00:39:33] So yeah, I that was actually what I was gonna say
[00:39:35] You wish you should have more of it
[00:39:37] It was I was thinking it was gonna go there more and it didn't and it's but again
[00:39:42] I don't I don't know that it made it
[00:39:45] That's really badly. I still enjoyed this. It was fine. Yeah, I didn't this is one of my favorites
[00:39:49] Bits at the weekend update desk, I love that she was into it. It's a weird thing. The costume is really funny
[00:39:55] Not one of my favorites, but I still enjoy it. Yeah, she's very good at her job
[00:39:59] I would have of course loved some more Roasty Josty
[00:40:02] Yeah, it wasn't weird enough for me for Sarah Sherman. I get needed to be just
[00:40:08] especially when you're talking about a
[00:40:10] full presidential candidate
[00:40:13] Legitimately talking about having a brain work and wanting to eat five more
[00:40:16] Yeah, and saying that he would be perfectly fine. Oh boy Jesus Christ this fucking guy
[00:40:21] All right, Heidi Gardner appears as a woman who insists she's not mad
[00:40:26] She stops by to discuss Mother's Day gifts. This one was written by Sarah. Is it Sierra or Sarah? I always forget
[00:40:33] It's it's because it's because it's spelled like it could be Sierra, but it also could be a weird spelling of Sarah
[00:40:38] I'm gonna confess something to our listeners
[00:40:41] I have to look this up often because I forget and I even write down the pronunciation and then I still forget
[00:40:49] but I
[00:40:50] It's actually either
[00:40:52] It actually might be Kara. Oh, that's a third
[00:40:58] Well, we'd like to apologize maybe it's Chiara too, right? It's just anyway, very Irish Oh Sullivan
[00:41:05] And Heidi Gardner wrote this one. What did you guys think of Heidi?
[00:41:09] Gardner doing Heidi Gardner like she's done this character in different
[00:41:13] Variations and times so the the thing that that elevates this one for me is
[00:41:18] the physicality
[00:41:20] The her demeanor overall and and the the boxing wife that she's done before whatever. That's all voice this
[00:41:29] Physicality of like when she was trying to get up and leave but didn't actually get up and leave and had to kind of
[00:41:34] Fake yeah three times and though her body just like the jarring movements
[00:41:38] I was like I was really laughing the difference for me with this as opposed to the other characters is
[00:41:42] Doos the other character she's done are that the those other characters feel like they're coming from a place of
[00:41:50] Parody when it comes to like movie characters or like like care actual character who's seen this has like an air of reality
[00:41:56] I said this gave me PTSD
[00:42:00] Yeah, cuz cuz she nails like the tone the facial expressions of like we feel that because you know
[00:42:06] We're dudes and we've had girlfriends and also idiots. We've had wives pretty dumb
[00:42:10] So so yeah, it is it worked on that level for me. And that's why I still appreciate I'm not mad
[00:42:15] I'm not mad. Yeah
[00:42:16] No
[00:42:16] I was I was watching this sitting next to my girlfriend and I was laughing and being like we've had moment that
[00:42:23] Shit I yeah, no that's I've seen that I've literally seen that before and she by the way she was right
[00:42:30] Them is it mailer Damon. Oh, yeah
[00:42:34] That was a great little joke. Yeah, that was nice
[00:42:37] Yeah, exactly for those of us nerds. So I
[00:42:41] Understood that reference. I thought it was good. I thought it was fine. Like it was Heidi Gardner doing Heidi Gardner
[00:42:45] It was it was solid. I wasn't I wasn't blown away by it, but I did I did laugh
[00:42:48] I liked her performance also. She's very
[00:42:53] Real she's so pretty and so talented
[00:42:57] You don't have a chance stop sending the letters to
[00:43:01] Literally had a cease-and-distance that are sent to this podcast
[00:43:04] The British caveman sketch happened and now I'm just waiting for Heidi to respond to me
[00:43:09] Okay, it's one thing after another here boys. Thanks
[00:43:13] Alright guys the next sketch coffee commercial a taping for a coffee commercial with a famous actress played by Maya Rudolph goes off
[00:43:20] The rails thanks to caffeine and farts
[00:43:22] Bowen Yang Heidi Gardner and Chloe Trost also appear
[00:43:25] Did you guys know that this is based on a real series of commercials? I did with Lauren Bacall. Yes, correct
[00:43:31] These are real
[00:43:33] commercials featuring Lauren Bacall that do have a similar vibe except of course Maya Rudolph takes it in a much different direction
[00:43:38] This was another sketch that like it felt very silly felt kind of like a throwback. I wasn't expecting the farts
[00:43:45] I thought it was gonna be purely a caffeine like gradual thing more hyper speaking quicker
[00:43:51] But the farts added a whole other stupid dynamic to it
[00:43:54] I bet if we got to talk to Maya Rudolph and hopefully one day we will
[00:43:59] She is going to be like us and she's gonna say I still laugh at fart jokes
[00:44:05] Obviously right because there's just so many fart jokes are like just like with Maya Rudolph that she knows
[00:44:11] It's funny stuff the when they
[00:44:14] When when the turn hits and it's like, oh no, I've never had this before then I'm like, I'm so happy
[00:44:19] I'm so ready. Yeah for whatever is coming next because now I know what the turn is
[00:44:24] Fuck let's go, you know, and then of course running through it
[00:44:27] I wasn't expecting either it made me laugh and it got to the point too where the farts were like
[00:44:32] Echoing the tone of her voice
[00:44:35] And I one thing I appreciate about a good fart like one thing
[00:44:39] About a good fart a good fart scenario like this is they didn't use any of like the the familiar
[00:44:46] canned fart sounds like that you expect to hear like there's there's a certain sound board where there's lazy fart sounds
[00:44:52] They didn't use any of those
[00:44:54] These were all fresh for
[00:44:57] And I mean this genuine
[00:44:59] I hate there's like five or six fart sounds or like I've heard that fucking fart so many times before I'm sick
[00:45:04] Of it. These were great new farts. They had the sound editors get out
[00:45:09] Hey, buddy, we're going to eat some really crappy food
[00:45:13] We're gonna go we're gonna go to the bathroom at the subway platform and we need new farts
[00:45:19] The that one was you line got me really good. I know that was hilarious
[00:45:24] Yeah, that one was you. Yeah
[00:45:27] Also, it does remind me of the bridesmaids scene though where they have diarrhea and in just
[00:45:33] Like cuz Maya Rudolph talking about farts and all these kind of things and if you've not seen bridesmaids
[00:45:39] You are missing out on one of the greatest comedies of the last
[00:45:42] I can't imagine there's like more than five people who have I hope I hope
[00:45:46] You're surprised but nominal, but there is a scene in there where they get diarrhea and Maya Rudolph is a part of that scene
[00:45:53] Kristen Chenoweth is it or Kristen Kristen Chenoweth?
[00:45:58] Secret bridesmaids
[00:46:00] Melissa McCarthy Melissa McCarthy
[00:46:02] Some other great great actresses Wendy McClendon Covey one of the funniest scenes in a comedy that I think I've ever seen
[00:46:10] also
[00:46:11] Her her elitist dismissal of everyone in the room. Right? Who are you?
[00:46:16] She needs to go and like I'm the director like I can't go. I don't like this one. Yeah, no wait
[00:46:23] I like this. Yeah, Punky Johnson. That was great
[00:46:27] So yeah, so that was the coffee commercial did you like it or no? Yes, I did. Yeah
[00:46:30] Yeah, I like that was pretty good
[00:46:32] next sketch nurse
[00:46:34] appreciation a group of nurses played by Maya Rudolph ego Wodim Chloe Feynman and Molly Carney share why they love being a nurse also
[00:46:41] Features James Austin Johnson as dr. Jeffrey Reed and Mikey day as an elderly man
[00:46:47] What do you guys think of this?
[00:46:49] Sketch this like like the teacher sketch. I think this would this would kill amongst the nurses, right?
[00:46:55] Yeah, but it I I was married to a nurse
[00:46:59] So I get some of this but like it's it's not great it just seemed very easy
[00:47:05] Like yeah, and I don't mean like easy to write
[00:47:07] Just mean like the jokes themselves were just like like something that we could have come up with
[00:47:12] What was his name Curtis or something Curtis if you see the light go to it like yeah
[00:47:16] I talk about the
[00:47:17] Like if you were to have a focus group and say list the worst things that you probably would think about being a nurse
[00:47:22] Like working at a nursing these were the things you would hear right? Yeah exactly
[00:47:25] They didn't feel particularly clever or anything in nursing homes suck, right?
[00:47:28] And it is like the lower echelon
[00:47:32] so my brother's a speech language therapist at a nursing home and
[00:47:37] Every other area of speech language therapy is better than nursing him
[00:47:40] He works there because it pays the best right, but he recognizes sure
[00:47:44] It's like the worst part of health care working in nursing homes
[00:47:48] But like it's these are very basic premises. These are very basic jokes
[00:47:53] I did like the catheter joke like it's like putting a straw inside of another straw
[00:47:57] Like I did like I like that. There's there's some stuff here that was fine, but overall it's like
[00:48:03] You know I I looked at snow because these these people are literal comic geniuses like they're awesome
[00:48:08] Yes, and I wanted more it felt very stale
[00:48:11] Yeah, like it just yeah like it almost felt like something like that
[00:48:14] They were like forced to put in like guys. It's nurse's appreciation week. Let's get some out there for the nurse
[00:48:18] Let me say this we're gonna get to this but the comfort time sketch
[00:48:21] I would have included the cover time sketch over either this one or the
[00:48:26] I did think of that but I also did look at the the length and the cover time
[00:48:30] You have to get both the teachers and the nurse one and then you have two minutes and I'd still make that
[00:48:38] I would rather someone's all the good nights would be two minutes long and there's just like Lauren Michaels over there doing the expand
[00:48:44] It with his hands my rose vamping for two minutes at the end
[00:48:48] With vampire weekends stupid fucking sports jerseys
[00:48:53] That's just a weird complaint you have it like it makes sense like they're all
[00:48:58] Our weekend by the way, yeah
[00:49:01] Yeah, but I'm just saying but like it's just it's a band doing a band thing. What does matter?
[00:49:05] Yeah, I fucking grow up
[00:49:07] All right guys the last official sketch of the evening
[00:49:10] landscaping service a couple played by Maya Rudolph and Mikey day
[00:49:14] Advertise their unique landscaping company that only hires hopeless sexless socially awkward
[00:49:19] Zeroes as played by Kenan Thompson andrew dismuke's Devon Walker and James Austin Johnson with Chloe Feynman Sarah Sherman Heidi Gardner
[00:49:27] And Michael Longfellow also appearing as clients
[00:49:31] What did you guys think of this sketch? This was a 10 to 1 sketch. Yeah, this was very I thought
[00:49:38] Well, you really
[00:49:40] Yeah, for sure it had it had right the right amount of weird with it
[00:49:43] We're like mixed with like a live commercial parody. Okay. I
[00:49:48] Just didn't think it was weird like lately the the weird shit happens all the time
[00:49:52] No, I mean compare it comparatively but like I think in this episode
[00:49:56] It's a 10 well sure if they would have gotten to why the company exists earlier than they did
[00:50:02] I would have liked this better
[00:50:03] But I also didn't mind that it took them that long either because the appearances by
[00:50:07] The other the truth themselves were really funny to share and and as a small business owner as you are like in
[00:50:14] In the construction kind of world
[00:50:16] We know lawn care companies that are not that dissimilar to this
[00:50:22] There was a little bit of humor for me in that also I
[00:50:27] Knew two of these four guys in high school. You were one of them
[00:50:33] So I thought it's pretty funny
[00:50:35] It was great. It gives them the opportunity them meaning
[00:50:39] The four gentlemen that they got the opportunity to be spastic and weird that was those are fun characters
[00:50:45] I laughed out loud at Devin walkers when she's like, can you trim the hedge? Okay
[00:50:55] But yeah, no I like this and then and I like I said
[00:50:57] I liked the getting to the point of it, which was Maya Rudolph and Mikey day having this rocky marriage history
[00:51:03] Okay, so especially especially because that itself had escalation in it. Yes. No, it wasn't just this it happened two more times
[00:51:10] And it wasn't just with the one it was the other postpartum depression
[00:51:13] Our kid was in college so yeah, Mickey days reactions
[00:51:17] I so maybe it's not that it took so long to get there
[00:51:20] It's that they they didn't go then long enough because I was enjoying that so much. I wish it would have kept going
[00:51:25] Yeah, I I wanted to see more of that dynamic. So here's great solution
[00:51:33] We're gonna fix this guess yeah, I could get two more minutes
[00:51:36] That's what I say get two more minutes out of that one
[00:51:38] The nursing one out cut the education one out put the copper time and hey we're done and now
[00:51:45] Michael's we did it guys
[00:51:48] Alright, so we do have one more sketch to go over because there was a cut for time sketch
[00:51:53] Go to the YouTube subscribe to the YouTube. Yes go to the Saturday night live YouTube if you want to see it
[00:51:57] This is TT and Mario's new album now. Did you guys realize that this was a
[00:52:03] Recurring sketch. I know this was the second time they have done this sketch
[00:52:08] Do you know what the first time was? Well, we both just admitted we didn't know that so I'm gonna say
[00:52:14] I'm gonna ask if you can figure it out and then out of all the SNL episodes that there have been in the past
[00:52:18] If you say one of Maya Rudolph's appearances say that's correct
[00:52:23] But not when she hosted. Oh, no when she was a cast
[00:52:28] 2013 I just looked it up. No, that's wrong
[00:52:32] The best of TT and Mario it says it's not that's not in 2013
[00:52:35] That's when it was published the the sketch itself. Oh, that's it makes sense
[00:52:39] Yeah
[00:52:39] It was it was a another sketch was commercial parody about these two doing another album where it had Jason
[00:52:45] Bateman as the host and Amy Poehler as a cast member. It was in season 30 in
[00:52:50] 2005 and this one the first one was actually just have them doing
[00:52:56] Sex songs that had like gross and like funny angles to it. And obviously this one it's been 20 years almost
[00:53:02] They've aged the characters and now they're having sexy songs that are interrupted by the normal problems
[00:53:08] You know, it's crazy to me to think about is that Kenan Thompson was on the cast in the cast
[00:53:14] Yeah, when Maya Rudolph was and he hasn't aged a day
[00:53:17] No
[00:53:18] But like like they were in the cast together. Is that just crazy? It is nuts
[00:53:23] I do I wonder about that dynamic when I when a host
[00:53:27] Come or when a former cast member
[00:53:29] Especially somebody from that era comes back and Kenan is still there
[00:53:33] How many private conversations do they have about like remember when or or is it more of a just like a normal, you know?
[00:53:40] Hey great to see ya and we're back at it
[00:53:42] I'm sure Kenan has long time friendships with some people but I've never really read into that too much like
[00:53:48] Because he's been a part of so many casts
[00:53:51] Does he latch on to any one of those and still like he's is he calling up?
[00:53:55] You know people from
[00:53:57] 2007 cast or 2013
[00:53:59] To get together Kenan is such an interesting story because again this doesn't happen right?
[00:54:04] Is it very he's a unicorn in this and oh, but I have listened to interviews with him and people will always ask
[00:54:11] When are you gonna be done? Right? Like essentially because you're like 10 to 12 years past your like usually
[00:54:19] Go seven years, right?
[00:54:21] and
[00:54:22] He's like I'm gonna go forever. Yeah
[00:54:25] He loves doing it and like why would you why you know and and as we know as we watch and dissect every episode
[00:54:32] Kenan is a performer that performs at a high level ever so every and he is an
[00:54:37] Addition to this cast and I don't mean this as a slight against him either
[00:54:40] But like he's not the kind of performer who's like he's not a will farrell somebody
[00:54:43] He's not gonna go off and have like a movie deal where he's leading movies all the time like he'll appear in movies
[00:54:48] Every now and then he does when I had a TV show and his own TV show
[00:54:51] Yeah, it had his own TV show
[00:54:53] Yes, he did yeah and so and so like if he can keep doing he can be can do those things and he can keep
[00:54:59] Doing SNL like why wouldn't you sure he's getting paid pretty well. Yeah. Here's the other thing that I think is makes him a rarity
[00:55:06] He has recurring characters but only for the time period of like when the cast is together
[00:55:14] What's up with that? He did right for a while, but it's not like oh we're gonna do that
[00:55:19] Every every two years we're gonna we're gonna bring that back or every year he's gonna do one
[00:55:24] No, it's just when that core group of people is together
[00:55:28] Sudeikis and Fred Armisen and him
[00:55:31] That was great. And then now they don't do it anymore. He is one recurring that just keeps on living
[00:55:35] Who is that Reese do what and I'm fine?
[00:55:39] But that's just him. Yeah, yeah, and that's fine
[00:55:42] But again, he's got all of these where they're like time capsules
[00:55:46] Like he had recurring bit recurring bit recurring bit and they move on the other day because one of my favorite bits that he ever
[00:55:51] Did is the the scared straight sketches? Yes
[00:55:56] Yeah, because Sudeikis was the cop right so I wondered too and I'd have to look into this it's maybe this is some interviews but
[00:56:05] When the writers leave of those yeah, that's part of it too. They they don't hand those off, right?
[00:56:10] That's their sketches and I think that there probably is that too right where it's like
[00:56:14] I don't want to try to step into exes shoes to write this sketch
[00:56:18] But also these days, you know, Steve Castillo comes back and writes like you can bring
[00:56:24] Say we've seen this before where they'll bring a writer back and pay them just for a sketch
[00:56:29] Because they want to use because they've got a host or whatever
[00:56:31] So yeah, guys if you're if you're listening to the British caveman Ben Connors over here bring back scare straight
[00:56:37] Okay, that was that was actually one of the things that Vanessa Bayer talked about when she did her episode of The Good One
[00:56:44] And they talked about Jacob the bar mitzvah. Is it just good one?
[00:56:48] Because the podcast is good. It's just good one. Yeah, and so it's this is the podcast I'm talking about
[00:56:55] And so Vanessa Bayer talked about that about how like he Jacob went away for a little while because the writers that initially did
[00:57:01] It with him weren't there anymore
[00:57:02] Even though she was still on the show
[00:57:03] But then they came back and they did the farewell with right when everything so yeah
[00:57:07] So like the president is there to like do it if certain people come back and that kind of thing
[00:57:11] Because yeah, I would love to see another scared straight sketch. It's one of my favorite
[00:57:15] Yeah, that's a really great bit eight scared straights between 2008 and 2012
[00:57:20] Yeah, so what did you guys think of the latest version?
[00:57:24] With my Rudolph and Kenan Thompson, it's too long, but it's still clever. There's there's good stuff there
[00:57:29] But I didn't I didn't like to see him Mario. I like there was some
[00:57:33] Some really funny lines that we we watched this one together and the three of us
[00:57:37] We don't always watch song titles are very were very funny. Yep. I thought the
[00:57:42] What was it? I have sex go to sleep or something
[00:57:45] That was pretty good Michael Longfellow's dryness was a lot of other was greatness
[00:57:50] I thought actually it's so funny that they put Longfellow in this sketch because he has a very
[00:57:54] Bateman s quality about him so it kind of worked in that way
[00:57:57] Yeah, he can be he can do Teen Wolf 3. I thought it was good three wolf three wolf
[00:58:02] I thought it was good. It wasn't great, but it was a good
[00:58:06] Like we said it was better than the teacher sketch and the nurse's sketch and could replace them with with this one
[00:58:11] Yeah, okay. Yeah. All right, so that that's our episode
[00:58:15] Who was you? Well first what was your favorite sketch of the night?
[00:58:20] favorite sketch of the night
[00:58:23] Nate you want to go first. I don't know I'm probably gonna do the please don't destroy. That's what I was thinking
[00:58:30] But
[00:58:32] There wasn't a sketch in this episode that was fall down laugh out loud. There was some good sketches
[00:58:40] I do have a definite favorite though. You do it's British Cape man. I know I'm gonna go with the please don't destroy
[00:58:45] I like that one that one's close, but for me, it's coffee commercial. Oh
[00:58:50] Yeah, I loved my Rudolph in this sketch
[00:58:53] And I loved the escalation from it me me not knowing or thinking that I knew what the commercial was gonna
[00:59:00] Do going to the farts having the farts get increasingly more ridiculous the interaction with the other characters
[00:59:06] I loved her characterization of this fictional famous actress being
[00:59:11] Tengential to like a Lauren Bacall kind of thing sure I just really I just really liked how it played out and worked
[00:59:16] I just maybe laugh. Okay
[00:59:19] Now this may be a difficult question maybe who is your MVP? Well, he
[00:59:25] Was not here me out. Yeah, go ahead
[00:59:28] It's it's my real that's exactly what I
[00:59:32] But I think we're all we're on the same page here
[00:59:34] It's not because she went above and beyond it's because she was the one that was carrying everything hearing everything
[00:59:40] Yeah, hundred percent there. She wasn't given a ton of great sketches
[00:59:44] But she literally is she made she made a lot of the sketches better. She Kenan Thompson to everything
[00:59:49] He did. Yep in both the sketches that we like right?
[00:59:52] Yeah
[00:59:52] She was the thing that the magic in those sketch and then also I mean the monologue my god
[00:59:57] Yeah, no not too many. Yeah, I mean really pull up in
[01:00:01] Awesome it was amazing. She deserves it. She was great. Yeah, I didn't think it was a great episode
[01:00:06] But I thought Maya Rudolph was very good in this
[01:00:08] It's one of the rare ones where the episodes not great
[01:00:11] But the host is the reason it's usually when the host is great the episodes good. Yeah, she was great
[01:00:16] So yeah
[01:00:18] Wasn't a bad episode 100% agree. I'm glad we're on the same also cannot
[01:00:22] I mean let's get her a couple more times, you know in the next of years
